GENEVA, N.Y.—Juniors
Giana Lobozzo and
Amelia McCulley combined for 30 points for William Smith in its basketball opener tonight. However, visiting Geneseo put four players in double digits to take an 82-53 non-conference decision in Bristol Gym.
Lobozzo scored a team-high 16 points, including a career-high four 3-pointers. She was also one of three Herons to collect a team-high five rebounds. McCulley posted 14 points, canning a pair of 3s, grabbed five boards and blocked a game-high four shots. Junior
Miranda Martin also corralled five rebounds. Senior
Carly Scott chipped in eight points.
Grace Galgano led the Knights with a double-double on 19 points and 10 rebounds. She was 9-of-14 from the floor. Maggie McGrane added 11 points and a game-high five assists. Kristin Suydam and Audrey Hintz contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a tightly contested first quarter with the Knights carrying a 12-10 edge after 10 minutes.
- Lobozzo and her sister, Ava, accounted for all 10 points for the Herons. Ava scored the first bucket of the season for William Smith followed by eight straight points for Giana.
- Geneseo started to build some breathing room with a 9-3 spurt to start the second quarter. Galgano led the charge with three baskets.
- The Knights broke things open with a 14-4 run to end the first half. Again, it was Galgano leading the way with seven points.
- Geneseo led 40-27 at the half. Galgano had a game-high 13 points at the break.
- Giana Lobozzo converted a driving layup to open the second half scoring, pulling the Herons with in 11. That was as close as they would get in the second half.
KEY STATS
- Geneseo, which improved to 4-2 overall, shot 51.6% from the floor, while limiting the Herons to 33.3% shooting.
- The Knights controlled the paint, outscoring William Smith 48-18 in the lane.
UP NEXT
- William Smith (0-1) will make its first road trip of the season this weekend. The Herons will play Brockport (1-3) and Fredonia (3-0) in the 58 Main BBQ & Brew Tip-Off Classic, Nov. 21-22. William Smith will take on the host Golden Eagles on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a showdown with the Blue Devils on Saturday at 1 p.m.
