Herons down #13 Oswego 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on to defeat 13th-ranked Oswego in a SUNYAC contest at The Cooler this evening. It was the Herons' fifth win over a ranked opponent in program history.
 
Senior Kelly Howe and sophomore Rowan Kennedy scored in the victory for William Smith. Junior Mia Iwicki played all 60 minutes in goal and made 43 saves.
 
Jenna Majewski had the goal for the Lakers. Mia Devivo played just over 57 minutes in net and made 23 saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, William Smith improves to 4-1-0 overall this season with a 2-1-0 mark in conference play.
  • The Lakers fall to 4-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the SUNYAC.
  • This was William Smith's fourth win in program history against the Lakers and the second when Oswego has been nationally ranked.

  • Oswego finished the game with a 44-25 advantage in shots on goal.
  • William Smith was 0-for-2 on the power play and Oswego was 0-for-1 with the extra skater.
 
GAME SUMMARY
  • The Lakers dominated the first period finishing with a 20-4 advantage in shots on goal. Despite the territorial advantage, Oswego could not sneak a shot past Mia Iwicki in the opening stanza.
  • William Smith broke the deadlock in second period. Howe picked up a loose puck in the slot and slipped a shot through Devivo's legs for her second goal of the season. First-year Finley Crosby and junior Tara Valas had assists on the goal.
  • Kennedy gave William Smith a 2-0 lead at the 7:06 mark of the third period. She weaved through a pair of defenders and ripped a wrist shot over Devivo's glove. Kennedy's first goal of the season was assisted Laine Heiser and Abigail Schum.
 
  • Majewski broke up the shutout bid with 29 seconds remaining in regulation. She poked a loose puck past Iwicki for her fifth goal of the year. Sydney Pinti and Meagan Smith had assists on the goal.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 22, when it welcomes Canton to The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
