GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior
Kelly Howe scored 3:41 into overtime as the William Smith ice hockey team edged SUNY Canton 2-1 in a tightly contested SUNYAC contest at The Cooler this afternoon. Both teams entered the weekend receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll.
Sophomore
Bella Hacker led William Smith with a goal and an assist in the victory. Junior
Mia Iwicki played just under 64 minutes in goal and made 29 saves, including stopping a penalty shot in the third period.
Alyssa Townsley played 63 minutes in goal for the Roos and made 20 saves.
THE WINNER
- With 90 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Hacker collected a loose puck in her own defensive end. She stopped in the left faceoff circle and fired a wrist shot on goal. Townsley made the initial stop, but the rebound popped out to Howe on the left goal post. She stuffed the loose puck past the Canton goalie for her third goal of the season.
THE THIRD PERIOD
- Hacker opened the scoring at the 11:18 mark of the third period. She collected a pass from Ainsley Lonczak, skated into the slot and fired a shot over Townsley's blocker and into the upper left corner of the cage.
- Just under 30 seconds later, Canton was awarded a penalty shot when a William Smith defender covered the puck in the crease. Isabella Paswater attempted the penalty shot for the Roos. She skated into the slot and snapped a shot on goal that was turned aside by Iwicki.
- Canton drew level with 8.6 seconds remaining on the clock with a power-play goal. Kylah Small redirected a shot from the point past Iwicki for her third goal of the season. It was assisted by Lucy Beal and Anna Pavlasova. The Roos had also pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Canton concluded the game with a 30-22 edge in shots on goal. William Smith had all four shots in the extra session.
- The Roos were 1-for-2 on the power play. The Heron were 0-for-1 with the extra skater.

- With the win, William Smith improves to 5-1-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in SUNYAC play.
- Canton falls to 5-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play.
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 29, when it heads to UMass Boston for the Codfish Bowl. The Herons will open the tournament against Bowdoin on Saturday at 4 p.m.
