UMass Boston blanks William Smith 2-0

BOSTON, Mass.—The William Smith ice hockey team was defeated by UMass Boston 2-0 in a non-conference contest at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink this afternoon. The Beacons scored a pair of goals in the second period and held on for the victory in the consolation game of the Codfish Bowl.
 
Junior Julia Chase started in goal. She made 18 saves in just over 58 minutes in goal.
 
  Maggie Lynch and Shayna Chin scored for UMass Boston. Leah Bosch played all 60 minutes in goal and made 23 saves as she earned the win.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the loss, William Smith falls to 5-3-0 overall on the season.
  • UMass Boston improves to 5-2-1 on the year.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In a tightly contested game, William Smith finished the game with a 23-20 advantage in shots ong goal.
  • Neither team scored a power-play goal. The Herons were 0-for-4 on the power-play and UMass Boston was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker.
 
GAME SUMMARY
  • William Smith had a slight 9-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.
  • Senior Kelly Howe had an early chance, 14 seconds into the game, but her shot was smothered by Bosh. Sophomore Ainsley Lonczak's rebound attempt was also turned aside by the goalie.
  • In the closing seconds of the opening period, first-year Finley Crosby had a shot from the low slot turned aside by the UMass Boston goalie.
  • The Beacons opened the scoring at the 6:03 mark of the second period. Cassidy Morrison broke up a pass in the defensive zone and fed the puck to Lynch, who was all alone in the neutral zone. Lynch skated into the offensive zone and slipped a shot through Chase's legs. It was her first goal of the season.
  • Three minutes later, UMass Boston took a 2-0 lead when Chin blaseted a shot from the right faceoff into the upper right corner of the cage. Avery Brooks and Kristen Briggs had assists on the goal.
  • Lonczak had William Smith's best chance in the second frame when she snapped a shot from the low slot off of the goalie's chest protector and into her glove.
  • Both teams had only four shots on goal in the final stanza.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Dec. 5-6, when it welcomes Manhattanville to The Cooler. Faceoff for Friday's game is set for 7 p.m.
