Herons hold off Valiants 3-2

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team jumped out to a three-goal lead and hung on to defeat Manhattanville 3-2 in a thrilling non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening. Three different Herons scored as they halted a two-game losing streak.
 
Sophomores Rowan Kennedy and Natalie May and first-year Finley Crosby scored for the Herons. First-year Julia Echavarria made her collegiate debut in goal and made 39 saves as she earned her first collegiate win.
 
Molly Sances and Colby Cantor scored for the Valiants. Olivia Cimorelli played 59 minutes in goal and made 34 saves.

  • With the win, William Smith improves to 6-3-0 overall this season.
  • Manhattanville falls to 2-6-1 overall.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Herons finished the game with a 37-32 advantage in shots on goal.
  • William Smith was 0-for-2 on the power play and Manhattanville was 1-for-7 with the extra skater.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Herons opened the scoring with six minutes remaining in the first period. May collected a rebound in the slot and slipped a shot past Cimorelli. Her first collegiate goal was assisted by Rachel Fernandez and Skyler Toffolo.
  • William Smith doubled its lead 99 seconds into the second period. Kennedy snuck a shot from a tight angle past the goalie. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Madeline Diglio and Anna Tardiff.
  • Crosby scored what would prove to be the game-winning tally just under two minutes into the third period. Skating down the left wing, she fired a shot towards the front of the goal. The puck hit off a Manhattanville defender and trickled over the goal line.
  • The Valiants started the comeback attempt. They broke up a clearing attempt at the offensive blue line.  Abby Mellen snuck a pass through two defenders to Sances in the high slot. She wristed a shot over Echavaria's shoulders and under the crossbar. Her second goal of the year was assisted by Abby Mellen and Danielle Stadler. one-goal
  • Cantor made it a one-goal game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. She redirected a shot from Danika Aubin across the goal line. It was Cantor's second goal of the year.
 
UP NEXT
The Herons and Valiants will wrap up the season series tomorrow, Dec. 6. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at The Cooler.
