#1 Statesmen power past #7 Pioneers 2-1, complete weekend sweep

GENEVA, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored a pair of power-play goals as it knocked off seventh-ranked Utica 2-1 in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the weekend sweep, the Statesmen improve to 4-0-0 on the season.
 
Junior defensemen Bauer Morrissey (1g, 1a) and Conor Lally (2a) led the way for Hobart with two points each. Senior Kahlil Fontana had the other tally for the Statesmen. Senior Damon Beaver started in goal and made 15 saves.
 
Drake Morse scored for the Pioneers (0-4-0). Kyle Curtin played 59 minutes in goal and made 30 saves.
 
STREAKING
  • Hobart extended its home winning streak to an NCAA Division III record 55 games.
  • The Statesmen have won 10 straight games overall.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart doubled up Utica in shots on goal, finishing with a 32-16 advantage.
  • Utica was 1-for-6 on the power play, and the Statesmen were 2-for-6 with man advantage.
  • The Statesmen smothered the Pioneers in five-on-five play allowing just nine shots on goal at even strength. Seven of Utica's 16 shots came on their six power play opportunities.
  • In addition to Curtin's 30 saves, Utica blocked 23 shots.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 6:41 mark of the first period. Morrissey fired a one-timer from the right faceoff circle past Curtin for his second goal of the season. Sophomore Arvega Hovsepyan and Lally had helpers on the power-play goal.
  • Utica tied the game just over six minutes into the second period. Standing near the left goal post, Morse redirected an Alex Gomez shot past Beaver. Aydin Parekh also had an assist on the power-play goal.
  • Just over a minute later, Fontana won the game for the Statesmen. Morrissey fired a shot from the right faceoff circle wide, but Fontana, who was standing behind Curtin, redirected the shot into the back of the net. It was Fontana's third goal of the season.

Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 14-15, when it begins SUNYAC play. The Statesmen will battle Skidmore on Friday at 7 p.m. The next day, Hobart will welcome Plattsburgh to The Cooler.
