Urban nets OT winner, Herons complete sweep of Cardinals

FAIRPORT, N.Y.—Senior forward Seneca Urban scored 1:06 into overtime as the William Smith hockey team rallied for a 3-2 victory over St. John Fisher at the Rochester Ice Center this evening.
 
Six different Herons recorded a point in the victory. Junior Julia Chase went the distance in goal and made 24 saves as she earned the victory in her first collegiate start.
 
Brynn Bacack started in goal for the second straight game for St. John Fisher. She made 26 saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, the Herons improved to 2-0-0 on the season. It is the first time since 2019 that William Smith has won its first two games to start a season.
  • St. John Fisher falls to 2-2-0 this year. The Cardinals, who are in their inaugural season, were playing their first home game.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 29-26 advantage in shots on goal. The Herons had nine shots on goal in each period in regulation and had both chances in the extra session.
  • William Smith was 0-for-1 on the power play. St. John Fisher was 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
 
THE WINNER
  • Urban's first game-winning goal as a Heron came 66 seconds into the extra frame. She skated into the slot and snapped a shot over Backack's glove and into the back of the net. Her first goal of the season was assisted by senior Kelly Howe.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Josie Palumbo opened the scoring for the Cardinals at the 1:48 mark of the first period. She snapped a shot home from the high slot for her first goal of the season. Erin Lantry had an assist on the tally.
  • William Smith tied the game 10 minutes later.  Sophomore Bella Hacker picked up a loose puck and flipped it past the Cardinals' goalie. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Abigail Schum.
  • St. John Fisher regained the lead just before the midway point of regulation. Ellie Pranter beat Chase for her second goal of the season. Eibhleann Knox had an assist on the power-play goal.
  • William Smith scored the game-tying goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Ainsley Lonczak fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle past Bacak for her first goal as a Heron. Laine Heiser was credited with an assist on the goal.

William Smith will be back in action this weekend, when it plays its first SUNYAC game. The Herons will be in Plattsburgh on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.
