ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked Hobart volleyball team fell 3-1 to Nazareth in its conference opener on the road this evening. The Statesmen fall to 17-3 overall and 0-1 in the UVC, while the Golden Flyers move to 10-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The conference matchup saw both sides produce nearly identical stats as Hobart (.324) and Nazareth (.346) both put down 50 kills through four sets. Both the Statesmen and the Golden Flyers recorded seven blocks and 49 assists each. Nazareth held a 6-3 edge in service aces, while Hobart combined for 32 digs as a team compared to the Golden Flyers' 31.
Graduate student Andrew Kim led the Statesmen with 19 kills, hitting .170 through four sets. He added six digs, two blocks and two assists in the loss. Sophomores Daniel Sappia (.650) and Noah DeLong (.417) chipped in 14 and 12 kills each, respectively. The duo combined for 11 digs and two blocks in the conference matchup.
Nazareth was led by Josh Weaver's 12 kills (.375), six digs and one block. Owen Wickens chipped in nine kills (.350), nine digs, three assists and two service aces in the win. AJ Burda tallied a team-leading 43 assists for the Golden Flyers.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- Nazareth came out hot in the opening set and jumped out to a 9-2 lead before a Golden Flyers service error ended the early run. Hobart put down 11 kills (.200) as a team but racked up six hitting errors as the Golden Flyers combined for 11 kills (.391) and only two errors. Nazareth found crucial points from the service line and from its block to grab a 25-18 win in set one.
- Hobart responded well in the second set and combined for 12 kills (.381) compared to Nazareth's 10 (.097). The Statesmen block stepped up and tallied four blocks in the set, while Sappia recorded six kills on seven swings (.857) to lead Hobart to a 25-20 win in set two.
- The Golden Flyers answered with a match-high 18 kills (.667) in the third set and held the Statesmen to a match-low nine kills (.217). Nazareth found at least four kills from three players and two total team blocks to grab back the lead with a 25-20 win in set three.
- In the fourth set, Hobart responded with a match-high 18 kills (.455) as Kim went off for 10 kills (.474) in the must-win set. The two sides traded the lead four times in the fourth set and tied the score up 14 different times. Despite holding Nazareth to just 11 kills (.308), the Statesmen racked up eight service errors, handing the Golden Flyers a 25-22 win in set four, closing out the conference matchup on top 3-1.
MATCH STATS:
- Kim led Hobart with 19 kills, hitting .170 in the loss. Sappia chipped in 14 kills (.650), while DeLong chipped in 12 kills (.417) through four sets.
- Graduate student Benjamin Lincoln led the Statesmen from the setter position and tallied a career-high 43 assists. He added eight digs, three service aces and a solo block in the loss.
- Hobart held a 32-31 edge in digs in the conference matchup with Nazareth and was led by Sappia and Lincoln with eight each. Kim chipped in six digs for the Statesmen.
- The Statesmen combined for seven blocks as a team and were led by first-year Kian Kischke with four. Kim and first-year Alain Malcolm added two blocks each for Hobart.

Hobart will be back in action Friday, Feb. 28, when it travels to New Paltz, New York, to take on New Paltz in a UVC matchup. Conference action between the Statesmen and the Hawks is set for 7 p.m. at the Hawk Center.
