Kemora leads #10 Statesmen in sweep of Valiants

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The 10th-ranked Hobart volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Manhattanville this afternoon as it traveled to Rochester to take on the Valiants in a nonconference match. With the win, the Statesmen move to 11-1 on the season, while Manhattanville falls to 2-6 overall.

The nonconference matchup saw Hobart lead in nearly every statistical category against Manhattanville. The Statesmen put down 42 kills (.250) compared to the Valiants' 27 (.182) and held a 9-5 advantage in service aces. Hobart also held a 33-31 edge in digs as well as a 38-25 advantage in assists in the sweep.

Sophomore Aiden Kemora led the Statesmen with 10 kills, hitting .250 in the sweep. Kemora added four digs, two service aces and a block in the win. Sophomore Daniel Sappia chipped in nine kills (.471), eight digs and three aces while sophomore Nathan Deller (.222) and first-year Josh Reilly (.182) added five kills each in the win.

Emil Medrano led Manhattanville with 11 kills (.280), seven digs and a service ace in the loss. Mason Moon tallied a team-high 16 assists for the Valiants.

MATCH MOMENTS:

  • The Statesmen came out firing in the opening set and combined for 14 kills (.176) as a team, while holding the Valiants to just four kills and a -.043 hitting percentage. Graduate student Andrew Kim tallied five kills (.444) on nine swings to help Hobart to a dominating 25-16 win in set one.
  • Manhattanville responded well in the second set and combined for 12 kills (.391) as a team but were matched by an efficient Hobart side that tallied a match-high 15 kills, hitting .462. Deller came off the bench and added four kills (.286) for the Statesmen to lead Hobart to a 25-23 win in set two.
  • Hobart closed out the sweep with another 25-23 win in set three as the Statesmen combined for 13 kills (.167) in the third. Hobart found crucial points from the service line and tallied three aces to close out the nonconference match on top.

MATCH STATS:

  • Kemora led Hobart with 10 kills, hitting .250 in the sweep. Sappia chipped in nine kills (.471), while Deller (.222) and Reilly (.182) added five kills each through three sets.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Lincoln and sophomore Zack Farren led the Statesmen from the setter position and tallied 19 and 12 assists each, respectively. The duo combined for 11 digs, two service aces and one kill.
  • Hobart combined for 33 digs as a team and was led by Lincoln with nine. Sappia chipped in eight, while sophomore libero Gavin Meador added seven digs in the win.
  • The Statesmen served tough from the service line and tallied nine aces as a team. Sappia led the way with three aces, while Kemora and first-year Alain Malcolm added two aces each.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow as it welcomes Mount Union and Houghton to Geneva for a tri-match. The Statesmen will take on the Raiders at 11 a.m. in Bristol Gym before closing out the weekends action against the Highlanders at 3 p.m.
