Fast start sends #1 Statesmen to NEHC semifinals

GENEVA, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored twice in the first period and never looked back as it knocked off Albertus Magnus 3-1 in a New England Hockey Conference quarterfinal contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, the Statesmen are now 24-1-1 overall this season.  
 
Junior Tanner Daniels had a goal and an assist in the victory. Junior Damon Beaver made 19 saves as he picked up his 13th win over the season.
 
Paden Hicks scored for Albertus Magnus, which finishes its season with a 12-13-1 overall record. Chace Hale played 59:26 minutes in goal and made 41 saves. It was the second time this season he made 40-plus saves against Hobart this season.

  • Hobart extended its NCAA Division III record home winning streak to 50 games.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the game with a 44-20 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Hobart was 0-for-2 with the man advantage and Albertus Magnus was 1-for-2 with the extra attacker.
 
GAME MOMENTS
  • Hobart opened the scoring 86 seconds into the game. Sophomore Dominic Schimizzi collected a pass from Brandon Sacchetti and snapped a shot past Hale for his seventh goal of the season. Junior Ignat Belov also had an assist on the goal.
  • Six minutes later, Tanner Daniels wristed a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle past Hale. His 16th goal of the season was assisted by first-year Nick Dimatos, who broke up a Falcon clearing attempt in the neutral zone.
  • Hobart finished the opening Stanza with a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • In the middle period, Hobart picked up right where it left off, firing the first eight shots on goal of the stanza.  Daniels also hit a goal post at the 7:30 mark of the period.
  • Following a Hobart tripping penalty, Albertus Magnus broke up the shutout bid. Hicks fired a twisted wrist shot past Beaver for his eighth goal of the season. Robert Barrasso and Tim Manning were awarded assists on the goal.
  • The Statesmen dominated the third period, finishing the stanza with an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Three minutes into the period, graduate student Austin Mourar cleanly beat Hale with a slapshot from the left faceoff circle, but his shot hit the right goal post.
  • Senior Shane Shell sealed the victory for Hobart with an empty-net goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

  • Today's win was Beaver's 49th career win. He is now two wins behind Keith Longo on Hobart's all-time list.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, March 8, when it takes on sixth-seeded New England College in a NEHC semifinal contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Cooler. Norwich will take on Skidmore in the other semifinal also at The Cooler at 7 p.m.
