Balanced attack leads #6 Herons past Brockport 17-4

GENEVA, N.Y.—Nine different players scored a goal as the sixth-ranked William Smith lacrosse team crusaded to a 17-4 victory over Brockport in a non-conference contest on Stiles Field in the Poole Family Dome this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are now 2-0 on the season. It was William Smith's 43rd consecutive win at home.
 
Sophomore Kira Fulton (3g, 2a) and senior Katherine Murray (3g, 2a) shared game-high honors with five points each. Sophomore Mia Falco scored four goals to lead the Herons. Junior Natalie Daniels had a game-high eight draw controls. Murray scooped up a game-high five ground balls and shared game-high honors in caused turnovers with senior Nikki Pio and junior Lily Kuhn.  Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made nine saves. She added four ground balls.
 
Alayna Foos led the Golden Eagles (0-3) with two goals. Karaline McCarthy had a team-high six draw controls. Foos and Christian Ross led Brockport with two caused turnovers each. Arianna Reed started in goal and made 12 saves. Makenna Cady made two saves.
 
DEFENDING THE DOME
  • Since the Poole Family Dome opened the Herons are 18-0 when playing inside.
 
CLIMBING THE LADDER
  • With today's win, Smeader now has 59 career wins. That matches the William Smith career record held by Rebecca Splain '04
  • With eight draw controls, Daniels now has 238 for her career. She moves up to third on the Herons' career list.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith scored the game's first four goals and never looked back. Falco had the first two, her third goal of the season was assisted by Murray, and her fourth goal of the year was unassisted.
  • Four minutes later, first-year Cynthia Lyman collected her first collegiate goal to give William Smith a 3-0 lead. She dodged to her left and ripped a shot past Reed. Fulton made it a four-game 47 seconds later with her third goal of the season. Junior Delaney Cassidy had an assist on the woman-up goal.
  • Brockport momentarily broke up the Herons' momentum when Foos converted on a free position shot for her seventh goal of the year.
  • The Herons rattled off the game's next seven goals and took a 10-goal lead into the break. Sophomore Kayla Quirk started the run with her first goal of the year. It was assisted by Fulton. Daniels rounded out the first quarter with her eighth goal of the year.
  • Fulton gave William Smith a 7-1 lead 50 seconds into the second quarter. Her fourth goal of the year was assisted by Murray. Four minutes later Murray scored her first goal of the game on a free position attempt.
  • Fulton completed her hat trick with 4:05 remaining in the half. Junior Kate Colvin was credited with an assist on the tally. Fifty-three seconds later first-year Maeve Barrins notched her first collegiate goal on an assist from Quirk.  Murray rounded out the first half beating the buzzer with her sixth goal of the season.
  • Murray completed her hat trick just under five minutes into the third quarter. Her seventh goal was assisted by Fulton.
  • Angelina Soeffing stopped William Smith's run with her first goal of the season.
  • Falco scored scored the game's next two goals. Her hat trick goal came with 3:08 left in the third quarter. Her fourth of the day came 16 seconds into the fourth quarter. Daniels tacked on a woman-up goal to make it 15-2 with 13 minutes left in regulation.
  • Junior Taryn Luzi and sophomore Meredith Montgomery scored their first goals of the season to round out the scoring for William Smith.
  • Hailey Lewkovich and Foos had tallies for Brockport in the fourth quarter.
 
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, March 8, when it welcomes Cortland to Geneva. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
