Hornets sting Statesmen in Sunshine State

ORLANDO, Fla.— The 37th-ranked Hobart tennis team traveled to the Sunshine State for its annual spring break trip to the USTA National Tennis Center. The Statesmen opened up the week's competition against NCAA Division II opponent Emporia State Sunday, ultimately falling 7-0 to the 20th-ranked Hornets.

In doubles play, seniors Nick Grosso and Rahul Vallabhajosula remained undefeated and moved to 3-0 on the season as they secured a 6-4 win over Santiago Torres and Harris Kossover in the No. 3 spot. However, Emporia State claimed the doubles point after winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.

The Hornets continued on their momentum into singles play as they swept all six singles points to secure the victory. Senior Hyat Oyer put up a fight in the No. 2 spot, but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to Elbasnaly Mostafa. Grosso also impressed in singles play as he fell 6-3, 7-5 to Alexis Mattenberger in the No. 3 spot.

First-year Marco Olmos produced the closest match of the day as he forced a tiebreaker with Hachem Fahem in the No. 6 spot but ultimately fell in the tightly contested match.
