#37 Hobart bounces back with 2 wins in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla.— The 37th-ranked Hobart tennis team bounced back with two wins on Tuesday as part of its spring break trip in Florida, securing a 6-1 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the morning before sweeping Colby-Sawyer in the afternoon, 7-0.

The Statesmen started the day in doubles against the Blugolds, where seniors Hyat Oyer and Rahul Vallabhajosula earned a 6-4 win in the No. 3 spot over Andrew Mueller and Otto Schluter. However, Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the other two matches to claim the doubles point.

Hobart responded well in singles play, winning all six matches to claim the 6-1 victory. In the No. 1 spot, junior Nick Fischer overpowered Ethan Wurtzel 6-1, 6-2, for his first dual match win of the season. Oyer battled back at No. 2, defeating Pablo Rincón in a tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-3,10-8.

Senior Nick Grosso secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Schluter in the No. 3 spot, while Vallabhajosula took down Billy Hughes 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.

At No. 5, senior Troy Steiner dominated Sam Murillo 6-1, 6-1, as first-year Marco Olmos got a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ethan Leeser at No. 6.

In the afternoon, the Statesmen took on Colby-Sawyer in a match that was originally scheduled for Sunday but postponed due to weather. Hobart swept the Chargers 7-0 to move to 3-3 on the season.

The Statesmen started strong in doubles play, claiming the point with wins at all three positions. At No. 1, Fischer and Grosso defeated Ashton Meuse and David Dvorak, 6-1. In the No. 2 spot, senior Jacob Linares and Steiner bested Zsombor Homonnay and Jacob Riis 6-2, while Oyer and Vallabhajosula took down Aidan Jensen and Peyton Meuse 6-3 to remain undefeated in dual match play.

Hobart continued its dominance in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. Fischer rolled past Homonnay 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Oyer dispatched Ashton Meuse 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot.

Grosso secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Peyton Meuse at No. 3, while Vallabhajosula cruised past Leonardo Russo 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

At No. 5, Olmos delivered a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win over Oliver van Hattum. Rounding out the sweep, junior Tarang Malhotra defeated Riis in a pro set, 8-2, at the No. 6 spot.

The Statesmen return to action Wednesday, March 19, when they conclude their spring break trip against Hope. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
