POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— The William Smith tennis team opened Liberty League play against No. 33 Vassar on this afternoon, battling hard but ultimately falling 7-0 against tough competition. With the loss, the Herons fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers move to 4-4 overall with a 1-0 mark in conference play.
In doubles play, junior Haley Levine and sophomore Grace Magna put up a strong fight in the No. 1 spot against Erin McCusker and Sophie Shen but fell 6-3. Vassar secured the doubles point and carried the momentum into singles play.
In singles action, senior Natalie Haythorn had a close contest at No. 1 but fell to McCusker 6-4, 6-2. Haythornis now 2-3 in the No. 1 spot for William Smith. Junior Marin Montagne also put up a strong effort in the No. 3 spot but dropped her match to Maddie Kirby, 6-4, 6-2.

The Herons will return home next Saturday, March 29, to take on Hartwick in a nonconference matchup. First serve is set for noon in Bristol Field House.
