Herons tripped up by Lions

EWING, N.J.— The William Smith tennis team fell 7-0 this evening to regional foe, TCNJ, on the road. The Herons suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 1-1 while the Lions move to 1-3 overall.

In doubles play, senior Julia Pida and sophomore Mae Kellersman fought hard in the No. 3 position against Elizabeth Ring and Gabriella Robinson, forcing a tiebreak before ultimately falling 7-6 (7-5). TCNJ swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Herons continued to battle in singles action, with three players forcing third-set tiebreakers. At the No. 3 spot, Kellersman took the first set against Shruti Mannan before falling 4-6, 6-0, 10-5. Sophomore Grace Magna had a hard-fought match at No. 4, rallying in the second set before narrowly losing to Robinson 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.

Junior Marin Montagne also put up a strong fight in the No. 5 spot, taking the first set before dropping a tight 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 decision to TCNJ's Ring.

UP NEXT: 

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow as it heads New York City to take on the Violets of NYU. First serve between the Herons and the Violets is set for 1 p.m. in the Stadium Tennis Center.
