GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith tennis team earned a dominant 7-0 victory over Nazareth this afternoon in a nonconference matchup in Bristol Field House. With the win, the Herons improve to 5-8 on the season, while the Golden Flyers fall to 9-11 overall.
In doubles play, William Smith swept all three matches to secure the doubles point. In the No. 1 spot, senior Natalie Haythorn and junior Marin Montagne defeated Catherine Zak and Kenna Ellis, 6-1, to set the tone early. The duo is now 4-7 in dual match doubles play this season.
At No. 2 doubles, first-year Bethany Walker and junior Maddy Buck earned a 6-3 win over Sarah Stone and Ali Klee. Rounding out the doubles sweep, senior Emma Johnston and sophomore Teghan Torrey beat Isabelle Ianmitti and Victoria Cioni, 6-3, to move to 2-0 on the season.
The Herons carried their momentum into singles play, where they won all six matches in straight sets. At the No. 1 position, junior Haley Levine defeated Zak 6-4, 6-0, for her third singles win of the season. In the No. 2 spot, sophomore Mae Kellersman secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ellis to clinch her team-leading fifth win of the season.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Grace Magna dominated Sarah Stone, winning 6-0, 6-1. Magna is now 2-0 in the No. 3 spot this season. Senior Julia Pida earned her first dual match win of the season as she earned a 6-3, 6-4 win against Cioni at No. 4.
In the No. 5 spot, first-year Mia Jacobs improved to 3-0 in dual matches this season as she defeated Klee 6-4, 6-1. Rounding out the sweep, senior Mia Tetrault bested Ianmitti 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Tetrault is now 2-0 in dual match singles play this season.
