LATHAM, N.Y.— The William Smith tennis team put up a strong fight against nationally-ranked RPI this afternoon at TriCity Fitness, but ultimately fell 6-1 in the Liberty League matchup. With the loss, the Herons fall to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Engineers improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the Liberty League.
In doubles play, senior Natalie Haythorn and junior Marin Montagne delivered a solid performance at No. 2, defeating Gauri Mulyil and Taylor Chandler, 6-3. However, RPI secured the doubles point by winning the matches in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
In singles action, the Engineers won five of six matches against the Herons to secure the conference victory. Sophomore Grace Magna earned the lone point for William Smith at the No. 4 spot, defeating Brooke Bauer in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
At the top of the lineup, Haythorn pushed Nicole Ridenour to a third set in a gritty match but came up just short, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. First-year Bethany Walker put up a fight in the No. 6 spot, but fell to Neha Saraswatula 6-3, 6-0.

William Smith will return home to face SUNY Geneseo in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 15. First serve between the Herons and the Knights is set for 4 p.m. at the HWS Tennis Center.
