Game Recap: Hobart Baseball | | Ken DeBolt

Engineers take 2 from Statesmen

TROY, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team suffered a pair of league losses this afternoon at RPI. The Engineers won a wild shootout in Game 1 11-10 and shut out the Statesmen in Game 2 10-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game 1
  • Hobart pounded out 13 hits, including a three-run home run by sophomore Connor Schmiedlin and a solo homer by classmate Sean Garvin, but RPI scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a seventh inning balk.
  • Schmiedlin's first collegiate homer gave Hobart a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Engineers answered with a 3-run home run of their own in the bottom half of the inning and stretched their lead to 10-5 by the end of the sixth.
  • In the top of the seventh, Schmiedlin and Garvin both delivered RBI doubles, senior Nate Johnson added an RBI single and sophomore Cole Conte executed an RBI sacrifice bunt to make it a one-run game.
  • RPI added to its lead with the balk in the seventh.
  • Garvin hit his first homer of the season in the ninth, again pulling Hobart within one, but that was all the offense the Statesmen could muster.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game 2
  • RPI put up three runs in the first and five in the second to take an early and commanding lead.
  • All of the Engineers' runs in the second came via the long ball. Aidan Hicks hit a two-run shot and Julian Scarpa followed with a three-run homer.
  • Sophomore Jake Schulte came out of the bullpen to give the Statesmen 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
  • The Engineers loaded the bases in the eighth and Hicks ended the game with a two-run double to the left center gap.

FOR THE STATESMEN
  • Garvin and Johnson both went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Game 1.
  • Schmiedlin was 2-for-5 with four RBIs in Game 1.

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart fell to 14-10 overall, 5-7 in the Liberty League.
  • RPI improved to 18-10, 6-4.

HEADING HOME
  • The Statesmen are scheduled to return to McDonough Park to play Keuka at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.
