GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior
Christian Petry delivered a walk-off, two-run single to lift the Hobart baseball team to a wild 11-10 victory over Keuka at McDonough Park tonight. Petry was 4-for-5 against the Wolves with three RBIs.
The Statesmen (15-10) never held the lead until the final at bat, entering the bottom of the ninth trailing 10-6. In the ninth, Hobart scored its first run without the benefit of a hit. The Statesmen took advantage of two hit batters, a fielder's choice and two walks to make it 10-7. First-year
Jack Farnen lined a single into right to score two more.
With runners on the corners, Farnen stole second, Hobart's fourth stolen base of the game. Petry then lined a single into center to easily score sophomore
Connor O'Neil from third. Farnen came flying around third with the winning run. The throw from center just beat him to the plate, but the catcher was unable to hold onto the ball while attempting the tag.
Farnen was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. O'Neil was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Senior
Nate Johnson was hit by a pitch a Hobart record four times, coming around to score three times.
The wild finish completed an improbable comeback. The Statesmen fell into a 6-0 hole in the top of the first and trailed by as many as seven, but Hobart didn't give in.
After the first, the Statesmen bullpen minimized the damage. Junior
Peter Dunham (3 inn., 2 runs), sophomore
Garrett Grubbs (2 1/3 inn., 0 runs), and sophomore
Chris Lockwood (1 2/3 inn., 0 runs) kept the game from getting out of reach. Sophomore
Alex Frank pitched the ninth and was credited with the win.
Keuka (10-16) got three-hit games from Alex Evans and Derek Novicki.
Hobart will begin a three-game Liberty League series at St. Lawrence on Friday, April 18. The Statesmen and Saints are scheduled to play the first game starting at 3 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader.
