Herons host Knights to begin 3-match homestand

The William Smith tennis team will be back in action Tuesday, April 15, as it opens a three-match homestand with a nonconference match against SUNY Geneseo. First serve between the Herons and the Knights is set for 4 p.m. at the HWS Tennis Center.

William Smith (6-9) looks to rebound from a 6-1 conference loss to No. 22 RPI on Sunday. Geneseo brings an 8-3 record to Geneva and is opening its spring season against the Herons on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE HERONS:

  • Sophomore Grace Magna was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after an impressive week that saw her go 3-0 in singles play. She defeated Nazareth's Sarah Stone 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot, Bard's Maya Kelly 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot and RPI's Brooke Bauer 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot.
  • Magna leads the team with a 6-8 record in dual match singles play and is riding a three-match win streak. Sophomore Mae Kellersman and first-year Bethany Walker add 5-9 records in singles play.
  • Senior Natalie Haythorn and junior Marin Montagne lead the Herons in doubles play with a 5-7 record in dual matches. The duo has won two straight and is coming off a big 6-3 win over RPI's Gauri Maliyil and Taylor Chandler in the No. 2 spot on Sunday.
  • Junior Haley Levine and Magna are 4-7 in doubles play this season, playing primarily in the No. 1 position. Kellersman and senior Julia Pida add a 4-7 record in dual matches and are 3-7 from the No. 3 spot.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS:

  • Samantha Rava leads Geneseo with a 7-1 record in singles play at the No. 2 spot. Rachel Molloy is 7-2 in dual matches this season and is 3-1 from the No. 3 spot and 4-1 from the No. 4 spot.
  • Natalie Pipes plays in the No. 1 singles position for the Knights and has a 6-2 record in dual matches.
  • Pipes and Rava are 3-1 from the No. 1 doubles position and are on a two-match win streak.
  • Talia Wutz and Molloy are 2-1 from the No. 2 spot, while Katie Kujawa and Joann Catalano are 2-1 from the No. 3 spot.

SERIES HISTORY:

  • This will be the 20th meeting between William Smith and Geneseo. The Herons hold an 18-1 advantage in the series, including a 10-1 edge in Geneva.
  • Last time they met on April 20, 2024, William Smith defeated Geneseo 9-0 in Bristol Field House. Haythorn and Levine led the Herons with wins from both the No. 1 doubles spot and the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots.
