Statesmen tame Tigers 6-1

GENEVA, N.Y.— The Hobart tennis team earned a crucial Liberty League victory this afternoon, defeating RIT 6-1 in Bristol Field House. With the win, the Statesmen improved to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while RIT dropped to 6-8 overall with a 3-3 record in the Liberty League.

Hobart came out strong in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to secure the doubles point. At No. 1, senior Nick Grosso and junior Nick Fischer earned a 6-4 win over Christian Berko and Grahith Movva to move to 6-6 in dual matches this season.

In the No. 2 spot, seniors Hyat Oyer and Rahul Vallabhajosula dominated Alec Turcotte and Gabriel Escobar, 6-1, to earn their team-leading 12th win of the season. The sweep was completed at No. 3, where seniors Troy Steiner and Jacob Linares defeated Yu Tanimoto and Alexander Sinclair, 6-4.

In singles play, the Statesmen won five of six matches to secure the crucial conference victory. At No. 1, Oyer defeated Tanimoto 6-3, 6-2, for his team-leading 11th win of the season. He is now 10-7 in dual matches this season, including a 6-5 record in the No. 1 spot.

At No. 2, Fischer improved to 7-7 in dual match play as he earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Movva. Grosso had a hard-fought battle at No. 3, ultimately defeating Turcotte 8-7 (8-6), 6-3, to improve to 9-6 in dual matches this season.

Vallabhajosula added another point for Hobart at No. 4, beating Joel Pho 6-4, 6-4, for his eighth dual match victory of the season. In the No. 5 spot, Linares put on an impressive performance, defeating Gabriel Ecobar 6-3, 6-1.

Hobart will return to action Friday, April 26, when it hosts St. Lawrence for another crucial Liberty League matchup. First serve between the Statesmen and the Saints is set for 2 p.m. at HWS Tennis Center.
