Murray scores 6, #10 Herons edge Tigers 12-10

HENRIETTA, N.Y.--William Smith senior attacker Katherine Murray matched her career high, scoring six goals as the 10th-ranked Herons defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 12-10 in a Liberty League contest at Tiger Stadium this afternoon.
 
Murray added an assist to match her career-high with seven points. Sophomore Mia Falco had a season-high five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Natalie Daniels had a goal, won a game-high eight draw controls and had three ground balls. Senior Nikki Pio had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves.
 
RIT was led by Morgan Nichter's six goals.  Lily DePalma had three assists. Nichter, DePalma and Katherine Killian had three draw controls each and Killian had a game-high five ground balls. Ella Ruddy and Grace McDonald each played 30 minutes in goal. They combined for 10 saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the win, William Smith is now 10-3 overall this season with a 7-0 mark in conference play.
  • The Tigers fall to 9-6 overall with a 5-3 mark in conference play.

  • William Smith finished the game with a 35-24 edge in shots, a 20-16 advantage in ground balls and a 14-11 edge in the draw circle.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • RIT jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Nichter scored both goals for the Tigers for her 43rd and 44th tallies of the season. Both were assisted by Jenna Bovenzi.
  • Murray gave William Smith the lead with a natural hat trick. Her three goals came in a span of 77 seconds. The first and third goals were unassisted and the second was assisted by Falco. It brought Murray's team-leading goal tally to 35.
  • Kira Fulton and Falco made it a five-goal run making it 5-3 with 1:34 left in the opening frame. Fulton's goal was her 23rd of the season and Falco's was her 21st.
  • RIT rattled off the next three goals to make it 5-5 with 10:46 remaining in the half. Milena Stephen, Zoe Heffernan and Grace Validzic had the tallies for the Tigers.
  • William Smith went on a five-goal run to take a 10-5 lead just over five minutes into the second half. Murray scored the first two goals of the run. They were her 36th and 37th goals of the season. Murray then set up Taryn Luzi's goal with 4:38 remaining in the opening half. It was Luzi's 14th goal of the season. Falco and Murray tacked on unassisted goals to close out the run. It was their 22nd and 38th goal of the season, respectively.
  • RIT closed out the game, scoring five of the game's final seven goals. Nichter had four of the tallies for the Tigers. K
  • Daniels and first-year Lauren Collins had the two goals for the Herons in the final 16 minutes of the game.
