#10 Herons race past Yellowjackets 17-6, clinch regular season title

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 10th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team scored the game's first seven goals and never looked back as it defeated Rochester 17-6 in a Liberty League contest on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 11-3 overall this season and 8-0 in Liberty League play.
 
The victory clinched the regular season title for William Smith. The Herons earn a first-round bye and will host a semifinal on May 2.
 
On senior day, Katherine Murray led the Herons with five points on four goals and an assist. Sophomores Kayla Quirk (3g, 1a) and Mia Falco (2g, 2a) and junior Taryn Luzi (3g, 1a) finished the game with four points each. First-year Cynthia Lyman had two caused turnovers. Junior Delaney Cassidy scored twice and picked up a game-high four ground balls. Senior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves as she earned the win.
 
Alyssa Gorny had three goals for the Yellowjackets (4-11, 1-7). Gorny and Maddie Bunting had four draw controls each. Bunting added three ground balls. Isla Ablin played all 60 minutes in goal and made 10 saves.

  • With today's win, William Smith has won 48 straight games at home.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 36-16 advantage in shots, a 16-11 advantage in ground balls and a 14-13 edge in draw controls.
  • The Herons were 16-of-17 clearing the ball and Rochester was 10-13 on its clear attempts.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith seized control of the game, scoring all seven goals in the first quarter. Murray opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. Her 39th goal of the season was unassisted. Two minutes later, senior Kate Colvin buried a free position shot for her 11th goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Kira Fulton extended the lead to three goals 26 seconds later when she fired home her 24th goal of the year. It was assisted by Murray.
  • Kayla Quirk and Murray scored unassisted goals 24 seconds apart to make it 5-0 seven minutes into the game. Qurik's goal was her 10th of the season, and Murray's was her 40th.
  • Nineteen seconds later, Luzi fired home a feed from Falco. It was her 15th goal of the season.  Murray completed her first quarter hat trick with 2:02 remaining in the opening frame. She bounced home a free position shot for her 41st goal of the year.  
  • Rochester broke up the shutout bid two minutes into the second quarter. Gorny beat Smeader on a free position attempt for her 44th tally of the year. 
  • Luzi gave William Smith an 8-1 lead two minutes later. Her 16th goal of the year was assisted by Fulton.
  • Rochester responded to make it 8-2 with 7:59 left in the half on a goal from Lorelei King.
  • William Smith closed out the first 30 minutes with a four-goal run. Cassidy scored both of her goals during the seven-minute segment to bring her season total to seven. Her second goal was assisted by Luzi.
  • With 2:08 left in the first half, Kayla Quirk scored her second of the day on an unassisted tally. Luzi completed her hat trick 16 seconds later, giving the Herons a 12-2 lead at the break.
  • Rochester momentarily halted William Smith's run when Kassi Boehl notched her 10th of the season 48 seconds into the second half.
  • The Herons put the game out of reach, scoring the next two goals of the frame. Falco scored her 23rd goal of the year off a feed from Fulton with 11:05 left in the quarter. Quirk completed her hat trick with 5:11 left in the stanza. Her 12th of the year was on a free position attempt.
  • Both teams had three goals in the fourth quarter. Falco, Murray and junior Hannah Evans scored for William Smith. Falco and Murray's tallies were unassisted and Evans' goal was set up by Quirk.
  • Gorny had two of the Yellowjackets goals in the fourth quarter. Sara Mendelson had the third.
 
MILESTONE
  • With three draw controls today, Daniels now has 101 draw controls this season. It is just the third time in program history a player has had 100 draw controls in a season. She had 128 last year and Maddie Montgomery '24 had 106 in 2022.
 
UP NEXT
  • William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, April 26, at 11 a.m., when it heads to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on Vassar.
