William Smith welcomes RIT for midweek clash

The William Smith tennis team returns to the court on Wednesday, April 23, when it hosts Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League contest. First serve between the Herons and Tigers is set for 4 p.m. at the HWS Tennis Center.
 
William Smith enters the week with a 7-9 overall record with a 1-4 mark in conference play. The Herons are coming off a 7-0 win over Geneseo on April 15. William Smith swept singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets.
 
RIT is 6-9 on the year with a 2-4 mark in Liberty League play. The Tigers have won two straight and are coming off a 6-1 win over New Paltz last Saturday. Five of the six singles matches went to three sets.
 
ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • Sophomore Mae Kellersman leads the Herons in singles play with seven wins.
  • Sophomore Grace Magna is right behind her with six wins. Magna is 2-0 in the No. 3 spot.
  • In doubles play, the Herons have three teams with 5-7 records. Magna and junior Haley Levine lead William Smith with three wins in the No. 1 spot. Junior Marin Montagne and Natalie Haythorn have three wins at No. 2. Kellersman and senior Julia Pida have three wins at No. 3.
 
ABOUT THE TIGERS:
  • Maya McDaniel is 10-8 in singles play, with a 6-6 record in the No.1 spot.
  • Emily Greb is right behind her with nine wins. She is 7-4 in the No. 2 spot and 2-0 at the No. 3 spot.
  • McDaniel also leads RIT in doubles play with partner Melanie Saborio. The duo is 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the No. 2 spot.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • This will be the 29th meeting between William Smith and RIT.
  • The Herons hold a 23-5 advantage in the series, including a 15-1 edge in Geneva.
  • On April 24, 2024, RIT defeated William Smith 6-3 in Rochester. The Herons took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The Tigers rallied to win the match with five singles wins. Kellersman had the lone singles point for William Smith at No. 3.
