Hobart heads to UMass seeking playoff berth

4/24/2025 4:18:00 PM

The Hobart lacrosse team will play its regular season finale at UMass at 5 p.m. Friday, April 25.

The game will be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva) and webcast on ESPN+ with live stats available on umassathletics.com.

Hobart (4-9, 1-3 Atlantic 10) is coming off a 26-13 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Senior attackman Alex Rosa led the offensive fireworks with a career-high seven points on six goals and an assist. The Statesmen got six-point games from senior Will Delano (4-2), senior John Jude Considine (4-2) and junior David Peterkin (2-4).

The Minutemen (9-4, 2-2) are looking to rebound from a 14-5 loss at then No. 11 Richmond. Senior midfielder Trace Hogan led UMass with two goals and an assist while first-year goalie Owen Salanger made 12 saves.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • Richmond is 4-0 in the A10 and has secured the No. 1 seed in the four-team championship tournament.
  • High Point is 3-1 and can lock up the No. 2 seed with a win at St. Bonaventure on Saturday.
  • Saint Joseph's and UMass are tied for third in the league standings.
  • Hobart can move into a tie for a playoff spot, but must beat the Minutemen. A two-way tie with UMass would propel the Statesmen into the A10 tournament for the first time. In the event of a three-way tie, this weekend's results will factor into the league's tie-breaking procedure.
  • St. Bonaventure was eliminated from playoff contention with its loss at Hobart.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Sophomore faceoff specialist Mike Valent is winning at a record pace. He enters the game with a .669 winning percentage at the X (89-of-133). Hobart's Division I era season record is .659 set by Matthew Pedicine in 2018.
  • Delano enters the game with 95 career points. Since 1995, 18 Statesmen have scored 100 career points.
  • Rosa has 66 career goals, 18th on the Hobart Division I era list. One goal would move him into a tie for 16th place while two would give him the spot alone.
  • With 17 career extra-man goals, Rosa is fifth among Division I Statesmen, one away from tying for third place. Delano has 14 career extra-man goals, two away from sixth place.
  • Senior defenseman Nolan Firth is 10th on Hobart's career caused turnovers list with 31. He needs two more to tie for ninth place.

SERIES SNAPSHOT
  • Friday's game will be the 13th between Hobart and UMass. The Minutemen lead the series 10-2.
  • The Statesmen have never won at Garber Field and are looking for their first win in the series since 1985 (15-10 in Geneva).
  • Three of the last four meetings between the teams have been decided by a single goal, including a 13-12 game in Geneva last season.
