Saints slip past Herons on Senior Day

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith tennis team hosted St. Lawrence this afternoon in a Liberty League showdown in Bristol Field House, ultimately falling 5-2 to the Saints despite a strong showing. With the loss, the Herons fall to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play, while the Saints improve to 16-4 overall with a 4-4 mark in the Liberty League.

Before the match, the Herons honored their four seniors— Mia Tetrault, Natalie Haythorn, Emma Johnston, and Julia Pida —for their contributions to the program over the last four seasons.

In doubles play, Pida and sophomore Mae Kellersman earned their team-leading seventh doubles win of the season as they defeated Abigail Sicuranza and Ellie Fritz 6-0 in the No. 3 spot. Despite the victory at No. 3, St. Lawrence claimed the doubles point by winning the other two matches.

In singles action, Kellersman earned a hard-fought victory at No. 4, defeating Ellie McDermed in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5. With the win, Kellersman moves to 8-9 in dual match singles play this season and is riding a three match win streak.

First-year Bethany Walker added a win at No. 6, defeating Maya Stepic 6-4, 6-3, for her seventh win of the season in dual match play. At No. 1, Haythorn battled hard against Angelica Aksdal-Jansen, pushing the match to a tight second set before falling 6-3, 7-5.
