#10 Herons stymie Golden Knights 16-4

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 10th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team shut out Clarkson in the second half as it cruised to a 16-4 win over the Golden Knights in a Liberty League contest on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improved to 8-3 overall this season with a 5-0 mark in Liberty League play.
 
The Herons' spread their offense around with their first nine goals of the game coming from nine different players. In total, twelve different players recorded at least one goal in the win for William Smith. Junior Natalie Daniels led the way, recording four points on three goals and an assist. She also had a game-high seven draw controls. Juniors Delaney Cassidy and Taryn Luzi also had multi-goal games. Junior Lily Kuhn led the charge for the Herons' defense, finishing with a game-high five caused turnovers. Junior Caitlin Baker and sophomore Janey Sypeck added three and two caused turnovers, respectively. Senior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made three saves.
 
Clarkson, which falls to 6-5 overall with a 1-4 mark in conference play, was led by Madelynn Barnum. She had three goals and three draw controls for the Golden Knights. Rylee Ganter added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Riley Donovan played all 60 minutes in goal and made 11 saves.

  • William Smith dominated the stat sheet. The Herons finished the game with a 42-11 advantage in shots, limiting the Golden Knights to just two attempts in the second half.

  • Clarkson won the game's opening draw and scored on its first possession of the game. Barnum fired home afeed from Gabby Cranfield. It was her 44th goal of the season and the Golden Knight's only lead of the day.
  • William Smith took control of the game, scoring the next five goals. Cassidy started the Herons' run just under five minutes into the game with a woman-down goal. Her fourth goal of the season was unassisted. Less than a minute later the Herons took the lead for good on a goal from sophomore Kira Fulton. Her 20th goal of the season was unassisted. Sophomore Mia Falco added a goal with 2:36 left in the first quarter to make it 3-1.
  • Falco opened the second quarter setting up Luzi's 11th goal of the season. The tally came 19 seconds into the frame. Daniels made it 5-1 with her 19th goal of the year. Daniels weaved through a triple team and then fired a shot into the back of the net.
  • Barnum briefly halted William Smith's run when she converted on a free position attempt. Her 45th goal of the year made it 5-2.
  • First-year Maeve Barrins' second goal of the season gave William Smith a 6-2 lead with 3:54 left in the half. Her tally was assisted by Daniels.
  • Clarkson closed out the opening 30 minutes with goals from Brooklynne Perrigo and Barnum. It was their 20th and 46th goals of the season, respectively and made it a two-goal game with 30 minutes remaining.
  • That would be as close as the Golden Knights would get as William Smith went on a 10-0 run in the second half.
  • First-year Cynthia Lyman started the run two minutes into the frame. Her second goal of the season was unassisted. Six minutes later, sophomore Kayal Quirk converted on a free position attempt. It was her eighth goal of the year and came while the Herons were a woman-up. Daniels' 20th goal of the season made it 9-4 with 5:56 left in the third quarter. Luzi notched her second goal of the game with 4:20 remaining in the frame.
  • First-year Lauren Collins and senior Katherine Murray's goals made it 12-4 William Smith after 45 minutes. Collins' goal was her third career tally and Murray's goal was her team-leading 32nd goal of the year.
  • Daniels completed her hat trick to open the fourth quarter. Two minutes later, Cassidy's fifth goal of the season made it a 10-goal game. Junior Claire Davenport had an assist on the goal. With four minutes remaining in the game, Davenport notched a goal of her own. Senior Kate Colvin rounded out the scoring with her seventh goal of the season.
