#11 Herons down #18 Bombers 17-5

GENEVA, N.Y.—The eleventh-ranked William Smith lacrosse team cruised to a 17-5 victory over 18th-ranked Ithaca in a Liberty League contest on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the win, William Smith improved to 9-3 overall this season with a 6-0 mark in Liberty League play.
 
Junior midfielder Natalie Daniels led the way for William Smith, recording seven points on six goals and an assist. She also had 14 draw controls and three groundballs. Sophomore attacker Kira Fulton recorded six points on two goals and four assists. Senior Kate Colvin also had a hat trick in the win. She added two assists to finish the game with five points. Junior Delaney Cassidy had three caused turnovers and three ground balls while seniors Nikki Pio and and Livvy Von Heill had two caused turnovers each. Senior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made five saves.
 
Kelly Augeri led the way for Ithaca (7-4, 4-2). She had three goals. Lexi Kellish had two draw controls and Lily Cody had two caused turnovers. Mikaela Dattilo played all 60 minutes in goal for Ithaca. She made 13 saves.

  • With today's win, William Smith has won 47 straight games at home.

  • The Herons dominated the stat sheet, finishing the contest with a 36-15 advantage in shots and a 21-5 edge in the draw circle.
  • William Smith had an 18-14 edge in groundballs.
  • The Herons were 17-for-21 clearing the ball and Ithaca was 18-for-22.
  • William Smith's defense of Von Heill, Lily Kuhn, Janey Sypeck, Pio and Caitlin Baker limited Ithaca to a season-low five goals. The Bombers came into the contest averaging 12.9 goals per game. The defensive group also limited Ithaca to a season-low 15 shots.
 
MILESTONE
  • With 14 draw controls today, Daniels now has 305 for her career. She is just the second player in program history to win 300 draws. Maddie Montgomery '24 holds the program record at 318.
 
MATCH SUMMARY
  • William Smith jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Junior Taryn Luzi opened the scoring with her 13th goal of the season. She collected a feed from Fulton and buried a shot past the Ithaca goalie. Three minutes later Fulton fired home her 21st goal of the year.
  • Seventy-eight seconds later, Augeri beat Smeader pocketing her 20th goal of the season to make it 2-1.
  • The Herons answered two minutes later when first-year Lauren Collins collected her fourth goal of the year, firing home a feed from Fulton.
  • Ithaca rounded out the first quarter with goals from Augeri and Kathryn Scallon, making it 3-3 after 15 minutes.
  • After the quarter break, William Smith took control of the game, finishing the contest on a 14-2 run.
  • The Herons shut out the Bombers 6-0 in the second quarter. Daniels started the run with 10 minutes left in the half. Her 22nd goal of the season was unassisted.  William Smith then seized control of the game scoring five goals in just over two minutes. Fulton's 22nd goal of the season was assisted by Colvin. A minute later, Daniels ripped a free position shot past the Ithaca goalie. Sophomore Mia Falco, Colvin and sophomore Kayla Quirk scored in a 68-second span to give William Smith a 9-3 lead after 30 minutes.
  • Augeri briefly halted William Smith's run when she completed her hat trick two minutes into the second half.
  • Daniels scored four of William Smith's next five goals as the Herons pushed the margin to 10 goals. Colvin also scored in the third quarter for William Smith. In addition to her goal, Colvin set up one of Daniels' goals. Falco and Fulton set up Daniels' final two goals of her natural hat trick.
  • Daniels, Colvin, Collins and Falco scored in the fourth quarter for William Smith. Colvin's goal came on a free position shot and Falco's tally was unassisted. Collins' second goal of the game was assisted by Daniels.
  • Elizabeth Green notched the goal for Ithaca in the final frame.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith is scheduled to be back in action on Saturday, April 12. When it welcomes Bard to Geneva. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
