GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hobart tennis team earned its third straight win this week as it defeated Union 4-3 in a hard-fought Liberty League matchup this afternoon in Bristol Field House. The Statesmen improve to 7-7 on the season with a 2-1 record in conference play, while the Garnet Chargers fall to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League.
In doubles play, Hobart secured the early lead with two key wins to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, senior Nick Grosso and junior Nick Fischer took down Jesus Sosa and Ben Jacobs, 6-4, to move to 5-5 on the season in dual match doubles play.
The doubles point was clinched in the No. 2 spot as seniors Hyat Oyer and Rahul Vallabhajosula edged Austin Gregory and Vivaan Gupta in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). The duo is now 8-3 in dual matches this season and are riding a three-match win streak.
In singles action, the two teams split the six matches with both sides winning three matches each. At No. 1, Oyer delivered a convincing performance against David Wang, winning 6-2, 6-3, while Grosso continued his strong form with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jacobs in the No. 3 spot.
The match came down to Fischer at No. 2, who secured the Statesmen's fourth and deciding point with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win over Sosa. Fischer is now 6-6 in dual matches this season and is riding a three-match win streak.
