Herons drop conference matchup to Garnet Chargers

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith Tennis team hosted Union this morning in a Liberty League matchup in Bristol Field House. The Herons battled throughout the lineup but ultimately fell 7-0 in the conference matchup and fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Garnet Chargers improved to 9-3 overall with a 3-0 mark in the Liberty League.

In doubles play, the Herons notched a hard-fought victory at No. 3 as sophomore Mae Kellersman and senior Julia Pida edged Sydney Alphabet and Calista Finkelstein in a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-1). Despite the win, Union claimed the doubles point by winning the other two matches.

In singles action, Union swept all six matches, though William Smith showed resilience throughout the match. At No. 1, senior Natalie Haythorn pushed Chara Meidani in the opening set before falling 6-4, 6-1, while at No. 2, junior Haley Levine dropped a hard-fought match with Skylar Semon 6-2, 6-3.

In the No. 4 spot, sophomore Grace Magna had a close contest with Alphabet, ultimately dropping the match 6-3, 6-4.

William Smith will return to action Thursday, April 10, for a nonconference matchup against Nazareth at the HWS Tennis Center. First serve between the Herons and the Golden Flyers is set for 4 p.m.
