For William Smith senior rower Janeciah Cunningham, service is more than a calling—it's a family legacy. Her grandmother dedicated two decades to the U.S. Army, serving in operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the War on Terror. This spring, after graduating from HWS with a double major in psychological science and sociology, Cunningham will follow in her footsteps.
 
"Her example has been a profound source of inspiration. I have the utmost respect for my grandmother's military service and the life it afforded her," says Cunningham.
 
A four-year member of the William Smith rowing team, Cunningham credits her athletic experience with preparing her for basic training and beyond.
 
"Under the guidance of Coach Paul Bughenhagen, I developed the discipline, resilience and the mental toughness needed to meet challenges head-on," she says.
 
Cunningham has primarily competed with the second and third varsity eights. As a junior she helped the 2V finish second at the Liberty League Championships and placed 11th at the National Invitational Rowing Championships. During her senior year, she helped the 3V8 win a bronze medal at the New York State Championships. Cunningham also helped the boat finish eighth at the NIRCs. At the conference championship, Cunningham and the 3V8 competed in the second varsity eight race. They finished fourth overall.
 
Cunningham also highlights the vital role her teammates have played in her growth. "They continually push me to become the best version of myself and have taught me the values of teamwork, perseverance and leadership."
 
While the idea of military service has been on Cunningham's mind since high school, it was during the winter of her final year at HWS that the decision became clear.
 
"I chose the U.S. Army because I believe it offers a purposeful and fulfilling path at this stage in my life," she says.
Looking ahead, Cunningham envisions earning a master's degree in psychology with the goal of becoming a therapist. But for now, she's focused on gaining military training.
 
"While I remain passionate about pursuing a graduate degree in the future, I've come to realize that taking the time to gain real-world experience and challenge myself in new ways is the right next step," she says.
 
As she prepares to begin her service, Cunningham also knows she is joining a long tradition of HWS alumni who have served in the U.S. military.
 
"I'm excited to embrace this opportunity for growth, leadership and service," she says.
 
On campus, Cunningham participated in a Summer of Service, working at the Boys and Girls Club of Geneva and was a member of the HWS Forever committee that encourages students to think about how they will remain engaged with their alma mater after graduation. She also was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and participated in several blood drives for the America Red Cross
