GENEVA, N.Y.— Three different Herons scored as the William Smith field hockey team cruised to a 3-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan this afternoon on McCooey Field. With the win, the Herons improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Battling Bishops fall to 0-2 overall.
William Smith dominated the scoresheet this afternoon, holding a 22-8 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. The Herons also earned 13 penalty corners compared to the Battling Bishops' three. Ohio Wesleyan recorded nine saves compared to William Smith's three in the nonconference matchup.
Sophomore
Caroline Kogut led the Herons with three points on a goal and an assist this afternoon. Classmate
Madison Campisi and junior
Ava Vecchione tallied two points on a goal each in the win. Graduate student
Rebecca Mantione and Campisi fired off a team-leading six shots in the win, combining for three on target.
First-year
Olivia Terranova played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded three saves in her first career shutout. She is now 2-0 on the season for William Smith.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Herons nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute after William Smith was awarded a penalty corner. After the ball was inserted, Mantione found the ball at her stick. She fired off a shot that deflected off the post and out of bounds.
- With 2:48 remaining in the opening quarter, William Smith would strike first. After being awarded a penalty corner, Kogut found the ball at the top of the arc. She spun around one defender and buried a shot far post to give the Herons a 1-0 lead. The goal was her third of the season.
- The Herons continued to apply pressure, firing off 16 shots in the first half but Ohio Wesleyan's defense stood tall, keeping the score 1-0 heading into halftime.
- Six minutes into the second half the Herons would double their lead. Jones led a fast break down the wing and sliced a perfect pass to a cutting Campisi. Campisi then made a move around her defender and fired a shot into the back of the goal, giving William Smith a 2-0 lead. It was her first career goal as a Heron.
- With six minutes left in regulation, William Smith would strike again. Senior Lily Gutch inserted the penalty corner to Kogut on the top of the arc who then dished off a pass to Vecchione. Vecchione blasted a shot near post to give the Herons a 3-0 lead. It was also her first career goal as a Heron.
- The Herons would maintain possession for the remaining four minutes and fired off one last shot before the time expired. With the win, William Smith improved to 2-0 on the season.

"Earning a shutout today against a strong Ohio Wesleyan team is an exciting way to start our season," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "We set the tone early, stayed disciplined and created plenty of attacking opportunities, capitalizing especially well on our corners. It was great to see two Herons score their first career goals, and I was really proud of how smart and connected we played defensively as a unit."

William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 3, when it welcomes SUNY Geneseo to Geneva for a nonconference showdown. Action between the Herons and the Knights is set for 6 p.m. on McCooey Field.
