GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season this evening as it fell 5-2 to No. 21 SUNY Geneseo in a nonconference showdown on McCooey Field. With the loss, the Herons fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Knight improve to 3-0 overall.

The back-and-forth battle saw both William Smith and Geneseo generate good scoring chances in the regional showdown. The Knights held a 17-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-6 edge in shots on target, while the Herons earned a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

William Smith was led by sophomores Madison Campisi and Caroline Kogut with two points on one goal each. Senior Rebecca Mantione recorded her first assist of the season, while junior Ava Vecchione tallied her first assist and third point of the season. Campisi led the way with five shots, landing one on target, while Kogut fired all three of her shots on frame.

First-year Olivia Terranova played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded a season-high five saves. She is now 2-1 on the season for William Smith.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • The Herons opened the scoring just 1:49 into the contest as Campisi notched her second career goal for William Smith. Mantione dribbled the ball up the right flank and slotted a pass in front of net, where Campisi tapped a shot past Bridget Schafer for the first goal of the game.
  • William Smith nearly doubled its lead five minutes later as it was awarded a penalty stroke after a Geneseo foul. Campisi stepped up to the spot but her shot ricocheted off the post and out of play.
  • The Knights responded well with an offensive spark that led to their first goal of the game. Sam Lewis took a shot from the top of the arc, which was deflected by Aubree Wenner past Terranova for Geneseo's first goal of the game.
  • At the 12:48 mark the Knights would strike again to take the lead. After a save from Terraova, the ball fell to an open Ava Harman who fired the rebound into the back of the net.
  • Geneseo would double its lead in the 22nd minute as Lewis used her speed to dribble through three defenders. She found herself one-on-one with the goalie and slotted a shot past a rushing Terranova.
  • William Smith nearly got back on the board in the 24th minute as a Kogut shot blasted into the back of the net. The shot was ruled no goal as Kogut was just outside of the arc on the shot.
  • Just 1:27 into the second half, Kogut would notch her fourth goal of the season after William Smith was awarded a penalty corner. Senior Lily Gutch inserted the ball to Campisi who sent a pass to Vecchione. Vecchione slotted a pass to a wide open Kogut who fired off a shot near post to bring the Herons within one.
  • One minute later, the Knights responded with their fourth goal of the game. Harman dribbled the ball through traffic in front of the net. The ball found the stick of Ella Greico who turned around her defender and slotted the ball past Terranova.
  • Geneseo would close out the scoring in the 50th minute as Lewis tallied her second goal of the game. Lewis took on one defender and fired off a shot far post past Terranova.
