SAA announces Hobart Hall of Fame Class of 2026

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Statesmen Athletic Association recently announced the next class of inductees into the Hobart Athletics Hall of Fame. The Class of 2026 includes Terence M. Cullen '64, of Vero Beach, Florida, William N. Zupan '72, of Cazenovia, William W. Sipperly '81, of Falmouth, Maine, Daniel W. Whelan '85, of Manlius, Richard L. Klotz '05, of Hamilton, Bradley J. Richard '13, of North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Richard Y. Bonney '14, of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Robert W. McNamara '15, of Lexington, Massachusetts, and current Hobart Soccer Head Coach Shawn Griffin, of Geneva.
 
The nine-member class will be celebrated during an on-campus ceremony on Saturday, April 18.
 
TERRY CULLEN '64 (football, lacrosse)
 
Cullen was a three-year letterman in football, quarterbacking the Statesmen offense, and a three-year letterman in lacrosse as a midfielder. He also played basketball during his first-year. As a senior, Cullen led Hobart to a 4-3-1 record on the gridiron, earning the team's MVP award. In the spring, he earned the Vandeverg Award as the most improved following a 10-4 lacrosse season. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics.
 
Following graduation, Cullen joined the Cornell Athletics Department as a sprint football coach. During a career that spanned nearly 60 years, including 45 years as head coach, he made a deep and lasting impact on hundreds of Big Red, teaching life lessons through sports.
 
In 1967, Cullen served in the U.S. Marine Corps. An infantry officer in Vietnam, he was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart for his actions during the war.
 
BILL ZUPAN '72 (football, track and field)
 
A dominating defensive tackle in football and a record-breaking thrower for the track and field team, Zupan was a four-year letterman in both sports. In the fall, he twice earned the Douglas Palmer Burke Award as Hobart's top lineman. As a senior, Zupan was named to the New York Times' Eastern All-Star Team and the ECAC All-East Team. A year earlier, he was tabbed All-State by the New York State Sports Writers Association.
 
In the spring, Zupan broke the Hobart record in the discus at Harpur (now Binghamton) as a first-year. He extended his mark another six inches at RIT later that year. Zupan eclipsed the mark a third time during his junior season, pushing the record to 140'4". He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history.
 
BILL SIPPERLY '81 (football, lacrosse)

A dominant faceoff midfielder, Sipperly won the 1981 Iroquois Nationals Award as the Division III player of the year as well as the Fran McCall Award, presented to the nation's best midfielder. Sipperly was a part of four consecutive NCAA tournament teams, playing in three national championship games and winning the 1980 and 1981 crowns. While his exact faceoff statistics are missing from the program's database, media reports put Sipperly's career faceoff percentage at well over 67%. Offensively, he contributed 43 goals and nine assists, including career-highs of 26 goals and seven assists during his senior year. Sipperly's 334 career ground balls are second on the program's all-time list, despite not including his senior total. He closed out his collegiate career by leading the North to victory in the annual North-South Senior All-Star Game, winning 10 of the 15 faceoffs he took. Sipperly also played two seasons with the Hobart football team. He earned a bachelor's degree in history.
 
Sipperly was inducted into the US Lacrosse Hudson Valley Chapter Hall of Fame in 1997.
 
DAN WHELAN '85 (lacrosse)
 
A two-time All-American and four-time national champion, Whelan was a staple in the Hobart lacrosse lineup on defense during his career. Tied for 16th on the program's career ground balls list, he accumulated over 200 GBs during his four seasons, including a team-high 82 in 1984. Whelan was honored with the Frederick O. Graham Defensive Player of the Year Award and secured second team All-American honors. In 1985, he served as a team captain, led the Statesmen on a six-game winning streak that culminated with a 15-8 win over Washington in the NCAA Championship game and received first team All-American recognition for his efforts. Whelan was presented with the team's Noel Filipino Memorial Award and the prestigious William C. Stiles '43 Memorial Award. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history.
 
RICKY KLOTZ '05 (soccer)
 
A high-scoring striker for the Hobart soccer team, Klotz was a three-time all-region selection on the pitch. He finished his career second on the program's all-time lists for goals and points, producing 42 goals and 12 assists for 96 points in 83 matches. Klotz was a two-time first team All-Liberty League selection. He led the Statesmen and was second in the league in scoring. Klotz earned the 2004 Stephen R. Murphy '77 Memorial Award as team MVP, a year after receiving the Geoffrey S. Perselay '75 Award as the team's most inspirational player. An all-star on the pitch, Klotz was exceptional in the classroom as well, earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in 2004, the first Statesman soccer player to win the award. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics.
 
BRAD RICHARD '13 (hockey)
 
Richard was a stalwart defenseman, earning all-conference honors in each of his four seasons on the ice and capping his collegiate career with All-America recognition. He anchored the 2012-13 Hobart defense that led the ECAC West and ranked sixth in the country, allowing just 1.85 goals per game. Richard, who had four goals and seven assists during his senior season, was voted the ECAC West Defensive Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the AHCA East All-America second team. A two-time team captain, Richard appeared in 97 career games, producing 22 goals and 42 assists for 64 points. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics.
 
Following graduation, Richard played hockey professionally for three seasons. He played with Alaska, Elmira and Orlando of the ECHL as well as 12 games with the AHL's Iowa Wild.
 
RICHIE BONNEY '14 (basketball)

The most decorated player in Hobart basketball history, Bonney was named the 2014 winner of the Jostens Trophy, presented to the Division III basketball player of the year, while garnering All-America praise from the NABC and D3hoops.com. He was unanimously voted the 2014 Liberty League Player of the Year, earned three straight All-Liberty League honors and was selected the 2011 Liberty League Rookie of the Year. He graduated with the program records for career points (1,738), field goals made (680) and games played (114). Bonney and his classmates led Hobart to a four-year record of 87-27 (.763) that included four postseason appearances, three NCAA tournament berths, three Liberty League regular season championships and two Liberty League Tournament titles. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and public policy studies.
 
ROBERT MCNAMARA '15 (rowing)
 
A two-year captain on the rowing team, McNamara competed in the varsity eight in all four years of his career. He was a four-time member of the Liberty League Crew of the Year and rowed for Team USA at the U23 World Championships. McNamara and his crewmates captured a silver medal at the 2014 Head of the Charles and won a silver medal at the 2014 Head of the Genesee. As a junior, he helped Hobart to its first gold medal in the 1V at the ECAC NIRC and also won gold at the New York State Championships. Additionally, he guided the Statesmen to gold in the varsity eight at the Liberty League Championships in each of his four seasons. McNamara was just the second rower ever to win the Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24 Memorial Award, presented to Hobart's most outstanding senior athlete. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in architectural studies and history.
 
SHAWN GRIFFIN (soccer coach)
 
The longest tenured and most successful head coach in the history of Hobart soccer, Griffin is in his 25th season with the Statesmen, sporting a 250-147-58 record with the Purple and Orange. He has directed Hobart to four Liberty League regular season titles, four Liberty League Tournament Championships and eight NCAA tournament appearances. Griffin was tabbed the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and is a four-time Liberty League Coach of the Year. He has mentored 115 All-Liberty League selections, including three players of the year and four rookies of the year. Before joining the Statesmen, Griffin coached eight seasons at Plymouth State. His overall head coaching record is 344-192-67. Entering the 2025 season, he ranked 10th in career wins among active Division III coaches.
