Leitner’s brace rallies Statesmen past Pioneers 2-1

UTICA, N.Y.—Hobart sophomore forward Brady Leitner scored twice as the Statesmen soccer team rallied to defeat Utica 2-1 in a non-conference contest at Laura M. Casamiento Field this evening. With the win, Hobart is now 4-0-0 on the season. This is the first time since 2011 that Hobart has won its first four matches to start the year.
 
Sophomores Griffin Coutts and Danny Spataro had assists in the victory. Senior Tommy Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
 
Zachary Accetta got the start in goal for the Pioneers (2-2-0). He made six saves.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hobart finished the game with a 17-5 advantage in shots. The Statesmen had all nine shots in the second half.
  • Hobart had eight corner kicks and Utica had one.
  • The Statesmen are now 38-1-0 all-time against the Pioneers.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Utica controlled the game early, with all five of its shots in the contest coming in the first 15 minutes.
  • In the seventh minute, Chyzowych made a diving stop on a shot from Byamungu Mugushu.
  • Off the ensuing corner kick, Joseph Cavallo fired a shot off the crossbar.
  • Utica's pressure paid off when Mason Bucher opened the scoring in the 15th minute. He redirected a crossing pass from Noah Nassberg for his first goal of the season. Mugushu also had an assist on the tally.
  • Following the goal, the Statesmen regained their composure and took control of the game. In the 18th minute, Will Slayton had a golden scoring opportunity turned aside by a diving Accetta.
  • Four minutes later, Spataro had a chance smothered by the Utica goalie.
  • The Statesmen drew level in the 36th minute. Leitner collected a pass from Spataro and snuck a shot past Accetta and into the lower right corner of the cage.
  • In the 51st minute, Joe Pariano nearly gave Hobart the lead, but his shot was turned aside by an Accetta kick save.
  • In the 72nd minute, Letner had a shot punched away by the Utica goalie. On the ensuing corner kick, he collected a bouncing ball in front of the cage and buried his fourth goal of the season. Coutts had an assist on the goal.  
  • Leitner had a pair of chances to complete the hat trick in the final 10 minutes of regulation. In the 81st minute, he headed a shot just over the crossbar. In the 84th minute, his penalty kick attempt was stopped by Accetta.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13, when it takes on Rochester. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
