Rebecca Mantione scored a second half hat trick as the William Smith field hockey team rallied to defeat Gettysburg 5-4 in double overtime to open the 2025 William Smith Classic. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Bullets fall to 3-2 overall.
The showdown between the Herons and the Bullets saw both sides impress offensively as the two teams combined for nine goals in the nonconference battle. William Smith held a 29-18 edge in shots, including a 20-11 advantage in shots on target. The Herons also held a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners and tallied one defensive save compared to the Bullets' zero.
Mantione led the way with seven points on three goals and one assist in the win. She fired off a team-leading eight shots, landing five on target. Seniors

Abby Jones chipped in one goal each in the win, while sophomore
Eliza Freeland tallied two assists and classmate
Mia Batchelder added an assist for William Smith. Sophomore
Caroline Kogut fired off six shots, while junior
Leah Griffith added four shots and a defensive save for the Herons.
Sophomore
Baker Jeremiah played all 77 minutes in goal for William Smith and recorded a season-high six saves in the win. She is now 1-1 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Bullets opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Jillian Somer's shot was deflected by Sabrina Post past a rushing Jeremiah.
- Gettysburg would double their lead at the 20:43 mark after being awarded a penalty corner. Somers would be credited with her second assist of the day after firing off a shot from the top of the arc that was deflected by Margaret-Ann Graves into the goal, giving the Bullets a 2-0 lead.
- Just three minutes later, the Herons would respond with a goal of their own. Sophomore Mia Batchelder fought for the ball during a scramble in front of the net. Her pass would fall to the stick of Jones, who tapped a shot into the empty goal for her second goal of the season.
- Five minutes later, William Smith would strike again, tying the game at 2-2. Mantione sprinted down the side of the field and slotted a ball to a waiting Gutch in front of goal. Gutch fired off a shot into the back of the net to even the score heading into halftime.
- Just 1:04 into the second half, the Bullets would grab the momentum back. Post would tally her second goal of the game after capitalizing off a pass from Colleen Ragan.
- Gettysburg would once again double their lead after forcing a turnover in the Heron defensive half. The Bullets forced a fast break as Cassie DeBlieck slotted a pass to Somers for her first goal of the game, giving the Bullets a 4-2 lead.
- With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Mantione sparked the William Smith offense as the Herons were awarded a penalty corner. After receiving the ball at the top of the arc, Mantione dodged one defender and fired off a shot into the back of the net making it a one-goal game.
- Just five minutes later, Mantione would strike again to tie the game with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Kogut fired off a long pass that found a cutting Freeland's stick. Freeland fed a through ball to Mantione who ripped a shot past the Bullet goalie to tie the game at 4-4.
- With 1:48 left in regulation, Gettysburg scored a goal after being awarded a penalty corner. After video review, the goal was waived off due to it being a dangerous shot, sending the game to overtime
- After a scoreless first overtime period, the Herons nearly scored after they were awarded a penalty corner just 53 seconds into the second overtime. The corner resulted in a Gutch shot that ricocheted off the post and out of bounds.
- The Bullets answered with their best scoring chance of overtime on a penalty corner of their own. Post fired off a shot that beat Jeremiah, but Giffith was there to stop the ball from crossing the line. It was her first career defensive save.
- With less than three minutes left in overtime play, the Herons would generate all the offense it needed as Freeland forced a fast break. She used her speed to fly by two Gettysburg defenders and slotted a perfect pass to a running Mantione. Mantione fired her shot past Delaney Ellsworth to give William Smith a 5-4 win. It was her third goal of the game and fourth of the season.

"That was an incredible battle today against a tough Gettysburg team," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "I'm really proud of the way we stayed composed and resilient through all the momentum shifts. We created a lot of attacking opportunities and capitalized when it mattered most. A 5-4 win like this shows our teams fight and belief in each other. We worked really hard all week, and this is a great step forward for us."
