Box Score GENEVA, NY – The William Smith tennis team opened its season by hosting the annual Mary Hosking Invitational at HWS Tennis Center this weekend. The Herons hosted the invitational that saw players represent William Smith, Ithaca, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), University of Rochester, Rensselaer Polytechnics Institute (RPI), St. Lawrence and Union.
William Smith was represented in each of the following brackets:
Flight A Singles
Senior
Haley Levine fell in the opening round to RIT's Maya McDaniel, while junior
Mae Kellersman fell 8-2 to Rochester's Lilly Caldwell in the round of 16. Levine went on to excel in the Flight A Consolation bracket as she defeated Ithaca's Sabrina Cheung 8-5, and St. Lawrence's Ariane Karera 8-7 (7-3) to advance to the championship match. In the title match, Levine fell to RPI's Kayla Wheeler 8-2.
Flight B Singles
Junior
Grace Magna opened the season with an 8-3 win over Ithaca's Madeleine Sutro before falling to St. Lawrence's Elisa Iuri in 8-5 in the quarterfinals. Sophomore
Mia Jacobs fell in the round of 16 to RPI's Anushka Jaiswal 8-1 to open the season. Jacobs went on to the consolation bracket, where she fell in the title match to Union's Megan McCusker 8-2. On the way to the championship match, Jacobs defeated St. Lawrence's Sarah Oldland and Union's Calista Finkelstein 8-5.
Flight C Singles
Flight C Singles action saw three Herons advance out of the round of 16. Sophomore
Bethany Walker defeated Ithaca's Ava Casell-Lapetina 8-7 (7-4), before falling to Rochester's Hailey Kornbluth in the quarterfinals. Senior
Maddy Buck defeated RIT's Amulya Settyvari 8-3 before falling to Union's Sydney Alphabet in the second round. First-year
Kaitlyn Hardy had an impressive collegiate debut advancing to the semifinals where she fell to Alphabet 8-5. She defeated Ithaca's Martina Nicora 8-3 and RPI's Taylor Chandler 8-1 before falling in the semis.
Flight D Singles
In Flight D action, senior
Lizzy Legg fell to Rochester's Esther Wang 8-3, while first-year
Anna Nigro fell 8-1 to St. Lawrence's Alexandra Fuller.
Flight A Doubles
The pairing of Kellersman and Walker fell to RPI's Taylor Chandler and Kayla Wheeler 6-1 in the round of 16, while Levine and Magna fell in the opening round to Union's Skylar Semon and Claire Langille 6-0. In consolation play, Kellersman and Walker fell 6-2 to Union's Chara Meidani and Kennedy Alexis, while Levine and Magna fell 7-6 (7-4) to St. Lawrence's Ariane Karera and Eleanor McDermed.
Flight B Doubles
In Flight D doubles play, both Heron duos advanced out of the round of 16. Buck and Legg defeated St. Lawrence's Maya Stepic and Kate Butler 6-1 before falling to RPI's Gaurij Muliyil and Neha Saraswatula 6-0. Jacobs and Hardy defeated RIT's Anika Galkiewicz and Amulya Settyvari 6-0 before falling to Ithaca's Madeline Sutro and Martina Nicora 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
