CORTLAND, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team fell 1-0 on the road this afternoon to nonconference foe, SUNY Cortland. With the loss, the Herons fall to 5-3 on the season, while the Red Dragons improved to 3-4 overall.
The thrilling nonconference battle saw back-and-forth action between William Smith and Cortland. The Red Dragons held an 11-10 edge in shots over the Herons, while William Smith landed nine shots on target compared to Cortland's eight. The Red Dragons earned 10 penalty corners compared to William Smith's six this afternoon.

Rebecca Mantione all fired off two shots each and combined for five shots on target. Sophomore
Hadley Harbert was credited with her first career defensive save in the loss.
First-year goalie
Olivia Terranova played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and made a career-high six saves in the loss. She is now 2-2 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Herons came out firing in the opening quarter and maintained possession through the opening 15 minutes of play. William Smith fired off three early shots, forcing Emma Morgan to make two saves.
- The Red Dragons flipped the script in the second quarter and fired off two shots, while holding the Herons shotless heading into halftime.
- William Smith nearly got on the board at the 36:06 mark after a penalty corner scramble found the stick of sophomore Ana Dios Vidal. Dios Vidal was fouled and the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke. Kogut stepped up to the spot but her stroke was saved by Emma.
- Cortland responded with their best scoring chance in the 44th minute when a Lillian Morse shot snuck past Terranova. Harbert was there to sweep the ball of the line but her clear was intercepted by Anna McCarthy who slotted her shot into the back of the goal giving Cortland a 1-0 lead.
- William Smith tried to respond in the final 15 minutes, firing off three shots against the Red Dragons, but all three shots were saved by Emma. Cortland was able to keep the Herons off the board, closing out the nonconference contest on top 1-0.

William Smith vs Cortland is always a battle and today was no different," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "The game was back-and-forth and both teams played hard for 60 minutes. There are many positives to carry forward and build upon. We look forward to being back at McCooey Field in preparation for Hamilton on Wednesday."

William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Clinton, New York, for a nonconference contest with Hamilton. Action between the Herons and the Continentals is set for 6 p.m.
