Bombers outlast Statesmen in defensive battle

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart football team found itself in another defensive battle, coming up short in its Liberty League opener 13-7 at Ithaca.

Senior linebacker Mike McGhee led the Statesmen defense with a game-high 15 tackles, including half a sack, and a pass breakup. Defensive linemen junior Hunter Vos and sophomore Billy Brosko each added seven tackles. Vos had the other half sack.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ithaca scored on its opening possession. Aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties against Hobart, the Bombers used 10 plays to go 75 yards. Running back Chris Scully scored on a 1-yard run with six and a half minutes left in the first quarter.
  • The Statesmen tied the game just before halftime.
  • Facing a fourth and short at the Ithaca 4, Hobart elected for a quarterback sneak that was stopped for no gain. The Statesmen defense kept the Bombers pinned inside their own 10 and forced a punt that gave the offense the ball at the Ithaca 41 with 2:56 remaining.
  • It was plenty of time for a seven-play drive that ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Weiss to Harding.
  • The Bombers scored on their first possession of the second half as well. The seven-play, 60-yard drive was capped by a 16-yard TD pass from Matthew Parker to wide receiver Nicholas Matos. The snap on the PAT went over the holder's head, leaving the home team a 13-7 lead.
  • Ithaca missed a 31-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter, leaving the door open to a Hobart comeback.
  • The Statesmen made one last push into Bombers' territory. Facing a fourth and 4 at the Ithaca 16, Weiss completed a short pass to sophomore wide receiver Luke Hansen, but he was tackled immediately by Tourangeau a yard short of the first down.
  • Ithaca was able to run out the clock from there.
