COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—No. 18 Ursinus struck for three-third quarter goals and Mother Nature wiped out the fourth quarter sending William Smith field hockey to a 4-1 defeat this afternoon. The game was suspended and ruled final when severe thunderstorms rolled in before the fourth quarter began.
Kirsten Johnson led the host Bears with a goal and two assists. Rachel Fosbenner, Marie Brainard, and Lauren Sieczkowski also scored for the home team.
Graduate student
Rebecca Mantione scored for the Herons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fosbenner opened the game's scoring midway through the first quarter.
- William Smith equalized with about two minutes left in the frame. On a penalty corner, junior Leah Griffith set up Matinone's first goal of the season and 21st of her career.
- It remained a 1-1 game through halftime. The Herons outshot the Bears in the opening 30 minutes 6-5.
- After the break, Ursinus' offense found another gear, firing home three goals in a span of just 4:24 and Johnson factored into all three.
- Less than two minutes into the half, Johnson set up Brainard on a penalty corner to give UC the lead.
- Less than 90 second later, the Bears earned another corner with Johnson assisting on Sieczkowski's tally to double the advantage.
- A third corner in the 37th minute saw Johnson take over scoring duties. She put a shot on frame that was saved by sophomore goalie Baker Jeremiah, but Johnson collected the rebound and found the back of the next with her follow-up shot.
- After waiting an hour as lightning struck the area, the game was declared official.
