KEY STATS

- Penalties also proved costly for Hobart. The Statesmen were flagged seven times for 63 yards, compared to four penalties for 30 yards against Alfred.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alfred opened the scoring on a 6-yard TD pass from Chris Kelly (14-21 for 122 yds, 2 TDs) to Carmine Hoag (4-44 yds), capping the Saxons' opening drive.
- Hobart answered on its final possession of the first quarter. Taylor scored on a 1-yard dive and Luke Monteyne's extra point tied the game at 7.
- Minsterman's interception set up an 8-play, 44-yard scoring drive that ended with Monteyne converting a 24-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead that held up until halftime.
TURNING POINT
- The momentum swung in the home team's favor during the third quarter.
- Chachere appeared to halt Alfred's opening drive of the second half with an interception at midfield, but the turnover was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty against the Statesmen.
- With the second chance, Kelly directed his team back to the end zone, throwing a 15-yard touchdown to Tommy Nyquist (4rec, 23 yds; 20 rush, 75 yds).
- After Hobart missed a 28-yard field goal (hit the upright) and Alfred punted, the Statesmen offense went back to work. On the third play of the drive, Thomas Welch stepped in front of a Conrath pass and raced 48 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 lead.
- Welch struck again on Hobart's next drive, forcing a fumble on a sack and recovering for his team. Eight plays later, Kelly scored on a 1-yard keeper for a 28-10 advantage.
LATE SURGE
- Hobart fought back with 70+ yard scoring drives, both finished off by Taylor TD runs, but the Statesmen weren't able to recover their onside kick attempt with just over two minutes left. From there, the Saxons ran out the clock.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
- Week 2 will see Hobart make another road trip, visiting Brockport on Saturday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is set for noon.
- The Statesmen and Golden Eagles will meet for the first time since 2019. Hobart prevailed in that contest 33-7 in Geneva. The Statesmen will be looking for their first win in Brockport since 2016.
