Statesmen win 3rd straight, down Cardinals 2-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team scored a goal in each half as it cruised to a 2-0 win over St. John Fisher in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With today's shutout, Hobart is 3-0-0 to start the season for the first time since 2021.
 
First-year Gabe Smith and senior Quinn Phillips scored for the Statesmen. Senior Tommy Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal as he notched his second shutout of the season. He made two saves.
 
Parker Stusek started in goal for the Cardinals (0-3-0) and made nine saves.
 
SHUTOUT STREAK
  • All three of Hobart's wins this season have come via the shutout. It is the first time in program history that the Statesmen have posted three straight shutouts to begin a campaign.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hobart finished the game with a 27-4 advantage in shots, including a 14-1 edge in the second half.
  • The Statesmen had seven corner kicks and St. John Fisher had one.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Phillips had the game's first scoring chance in the fifth minute, but his shot just missed the left goal post.
  • In the 12th minute, sophomore Brady Leitner's chance was turned aside by Stusek.
  • The teams traded opportunities in the 13th minute. Collin Gannon had the Cardinal's best chance of the game, but it was turned aside by a spectacular save from Chyzowych. At the opposite end of the field, Stusek robbed Joe Pariano on a point-blank opportunity.
  • First-year Daniel Scali nearly had his first collegiate goal in the 35th minute but hit the right goal post. Four minutes later, Brian Sheehan headed a shot off of the left goal post.
  • The Statesmen broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Smith redirected a through ball from Pariano past Stusek for his first collegiate goal.
  • Phillips doubled Hobart's lead in the 59th minute. After his initial shot was stopped by Stusek, the ball landed at his feet, and he buried the shot into the lower right corner of the cage.  
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, when it heads to Utica. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
