Herons, Seahawks battle to scoreless draw

SALISBURY, Md.—The second-ranked William Smith soccer team and St. Mary's (Md.)  battled to a scoreless draw in a non-conference contest at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium this afternoon. With the tie, the Herons are now 2-0-1 on the season.
 
Junior Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made three saves as she earned her second consecutive shutout.
 
Kyleigh Bland played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seahawks (2-0-2) and made eight saves.

  • The Herons controlled the first half, outshooting the Seahawks 13-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Junior Charlotte Brown had the game's first chance in the 11th minute, but a diving Bland turned aside her shot.
  • Less than a minute later, she had a shot blocked by a defender.
  • In the 40th minute, junior Rachel Lee had a shot bunched over the crossbar at the last second by the St. Mary's goalie.
  • First-year Sofia Carney had two golden chances smothered by defenders in the 44th minute.
  • The Seahawks' best chance of the game came in the 51st minute, but Sidney Shaw's shot was stopped by Goerke.
  • In the 64th minute, Bland dove to her left to stop a shot from Julia Accioly. Four minutes later, Accioly fired a shot off of the left goal post.
  • Sophomore Grace Metzler nearly broke the deadlock, but she ripped a shot from inside the 18-yard just over the crossbar.
  • Accioly and Fellow senior Anna Nichols had scoring chances from close range turned aside by Bland in the final minute.
COACH'S CORNER
"Today was a frustrating game overall, but we grew a lot as a team," Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie '08 said. "We challenged the group to play at another level in the second half and they rose to the challenge. Unfortunately, we were unable to finish our chances, but we are still able to walk off the field proud of our second half performance and hungry to get back to it tomorrow."

UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 7, when it takes on the hosts, Salisbury, at noon. The Sea Gulls lost to Rowan 1-0 earlier in the day.
