GENEVA, N.Y.After 15 years as a player and coach with Hobart football, defensive coordinator Michael Green '14 has resigned to accept the head coaching position at Gettysburg College.

Green has been part of one of the most successful eras in Hobart football history. As a student-athlete and coach, he helped the Statesmen compile a 122-39 record, win six Liberty League championships, make six NCAA playoff appearances, and earn five bowl bids.

Hobart Head Coach Kevin DeWall '00 will begin a national search for a new defensive coordinator.

"Michael has done a tremendous job here as an assistant coach and coordinator," DeWall said. "From recruiting and coaching him during his career at Hobart to coaching alongside him on our staff, I'm grateful for Michael's commitment and investment in our program. His work ethic, drive, and positive influence on our campus community have been outstanding.

"We're excited for Michael and this opportunity at Gettysburg. His experiences here will serve him well as he transitions into this new role. They are getting a very good coach and an even better person."

A member of the Hobart coaching staff since 2014, Green has coached on both sides of the ball and has served as defensive coordinator for the past five seasons. During that span, he mentored 28 All-Liberty League selections, including Liberty League Defensive Players of the Year Emmett Forde '21 (2021) and Jaimen Bliss '25 (2024).

"It's a bittersweet moment to move on from Hobart," Green said. "I've spent the last 15 years in Geneva as both a player and a coach, and the relationships and memories I've made here will stay with me for life. I thank Coach DeWall for his guidance in preparing me for this opportunity. My fiancée, Kayla, and I are excited for the next chapter in Gettysburg. Hobart will always mean a great deal to us."

Under Green's leadership, the Statesmen defense consistently ranked among the top units in Division III. This past fall, Hobart ranked 30th nationally in total defense, allowing a league-low 271.9 yards per game.
In 2024, Hobart won the Liberty League while ranking fourth nationally in scoring defense (11.4 ppg) and sixth in defensive touchdowns (4). The Statesmen set a program record for fewest yards per completion allowed (9.5), surrendered just five rushing touchdowns, and allowed 125 total points, the fewest by the program since 2000.

The 2023 Statesmen finished 10th nationally in pass efficiency defense, 12th in defensive touchdowns, and 14th in scoring defense. In 2022, Hobart led the nation in red-zone defense (48%).

In 2021, Green shared defensive coordinator duties with Matt Fleischacker, helping guide a defense that ranked in the national top 20 in multiple categories and recorded two shutouts.

Green joined the Hobart coaching staff following his graduation and was promoted to full-time assistant coach in 2015. He spent six seasons as the offensive line coach, developing 18 all-conference linemen, and also served three seasons as the team's academic success coordinator, guiding 52 Statesmen to Liberty League All-Academic honors and eight to Academic All-District recognition.

A native of Belleair Beach, Florida, Green was a two-year starter at center for Hobart. He earned third team All-America honors in 2013, was a two-time Academic All-American, and graduated with a degree in mathematics. As a player, he helped Hobart post a 34-8 record, win three Liberty League titles, and advance to the national quarterfinals in 2012.
