4-goal 3rd period powers #1 Statesmen past Bengals 6-1

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored four goals in the third period as it cruised to a 6-1 victory over Buffalo State in a SUNYAC game at the Buffalo State Ice Arena this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 16-0-0 this season and 9-0-0 in conference play.
 
Senior Tristan Fasig (2g, 1a) and junior Conor Lally (1g, 2a) led the way for Hobart with three points each. Senior Kahlil Fontana (1g, 1a) also had a multi-point game in the victory. Senior Damon Beaver went the distance in goal and made 13 saves as he earned his 11th win of the season. 
 
Sutton Murray scored for the Bengals (6-9-1, 3-5-1). Ben Dardis started in goal. He made 34 saves in just over 55 minutes in goal. Marcus Cumberworth made one save in just over two minutes of work.  
 
STREAKING
  • With today's win, the Statesmen have now won 22 straight games.
  • Hobart also extended its unbeaten streak to 29 games.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the game with a 41-14 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 2-for-4 on the power play and Buffalo State was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
 
GAME SUMMARY
  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 16:01 mark of the first period. Fontana picked up a rebound and fired home his team-leading 14th goal of the season. The power-play goal was assisted by Lally and junior Bauer Morrissey.
  • Lally doubled Hobart's lead 36 seconds into the second period. He blasted a shot from the point past Dardis for his ninth goal of the season. Fontana had an assist on the power-play goal.
  • Murray broke up the shutout bid with two minutes remaining in the middle stanza. He collected a rebound in the right faceoff circle and wristed a shot past Beaver. His third goal of the season was assisted by Lucas Signoretti and Austin Micale.
  • The Statesmen regained a two-goal lead 96 seconds into the third period. Fasig redirected a centering pass from Adam Mendelson past Dardis. Calum Chau also had an assist on Fasig's third goal of the year.
  • Hobart broke the game open, scoring three goals in 47 seconds in the closing stages of the third period. Fasig started the flurry with an empty-net goal. He fired a shot from near center ice into the cage. The goal was assisted by Lally.
  • Thirty seconds later, Dominic Schimizzi notched his second goal of the season. Junior Chris Duclair and sophomore Tamas Toth had assists on the goal.
  • Easton Ryan tacked on an insurance goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Fasig registered an assist on Ryan's 11th goal of the season.  
 
MILESTONE WATCH
  • Senior Ignat Belov became the 31st player in program history to play in his 100th career game. He is the third Statesman to hit that mark this season, joining Tanner Daniels and Kahlil Fontana in the century club.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 23-24, when it continues its four-game road trip. Hobart will take on Plattsburgh on Friday at 7 p.m. and Skidmore on Saturday at 4 p.m.
