Cortland trips up William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team was defeated by Cortland 5-1 in a SUNYAC contest at The Cooler this evening. The Herons are now 7-9-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
 
Senior forward Kelly Howe scored the goal for William Smith. Junior Mia Iwicki started in goal and made 27 saves in 40 minutes of work. First-year Julia Echavarria played the final 20 minutes and made 12 saves.
 
Kira Cook led the way for the Red Dragons (8-5-2, 2-2-1) with two goals. Ainsley Delacourt (1g, 1a), Kate Mahoney (2a) and Carlen Bertrand (1g, 1a) all had multi-point games for Cortland. Eline Gillodes played all 60 minutes in goal for Cortland. She made 20 saves.

  • Cortland finished the game with a 44-21 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Cortland was 1-for-2 on the power play and William Smith was 0-2 with the extra skater.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Red Dragons opened the scoring 78 seconds into the game. Cook collected a pass from Grace Karakas and slipped a backhanded shot through Iwicki's legs. It was her eighth goal of the season.
  • Ten minutes later, Delacourt notched her third goal of the year. She redirected a Katie Mahoney shot past Iwicki. The power-play goal was also assisted by Fanny Aneborn.
  • Howe cut the deficit in half with her fifth goal of the season. She forced a turnover below the goal line and stuffed the loose puck past the Cortland goalie.
  • Kylie Nolan's first goal of the season gave the Red Dragons a 3-1 lead. Her goal was assisted by Bertrand and Filippa Aneborn.
  • Bertrand made it a three-goal lead with five minutes remaining in the second period. She fired a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle past Iwicki. Delacourt and Mahoney had assists on the goal.
  • Cook rounded out the scoring at the 12:12 mark of the third period. Her ninth goal of the year was assisted by Drew Kopek and Sophie Hart.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 23, when it welcomes Morrisville to The Cooler. Opening Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
