Bowdoin downs William Smith in non-conference tilt

AMHERST, Mass—Bowdoin scored two goals in each period as they defeated William Smith 6-2 in a non-conference contest at the Mullins Center Community Rink on the campus of UMass-Amherst this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons are now 7-4-0 on the season.
 
Sophomores Bella Hacker and Ainsley Lonczak scored for William Smith. Mia Iwicki started in goal and made 45 saves.
 
Anyi Sun led the way for the Polar Bears (9-2-0), scoring twice in the victory. Sarah Peterson went the distance in goal and made 15 saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Bowdoin finished the game with a 51-17 advantage in shots on goal, including a 23-3 advantage in the first period.
  • Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Bowdoin opened the scoring at the 6:03 mark of the first period. Sun collected a pass from Abigail Ainley and wristed a shot past Iwicki. It was Sun's third goal of the season.
  • The Herons tied the game three minutes later. Hacker wristed a shot from the point through traffic past Peterson. Her fifth goal of the year was assisted by junior Tara Valas and senior Kelly Howe.
  • The Polar Bears regained the lead 29 seconds later. Bea Palmer stole a puck along the end boards, skated to the slot and floated a shot past Iwicki. It was her fourth goal of the year.
  • Sun gave Bowdoin a two-goal lead at the 14:28 mark of the second period. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Sara Ito-Bagshaw.
  • Ava Provenzo made it 4-1 Polar Bears with just over 19 seconds remaining. Crashing the net, she redirected a shot from Elena DiMagno past Iwicki for her second goal of the season. Charlee Frankenfeld also had an assist on the goal.
  • Ava Imposimato put the game out of reach with her first goal of the season. She fluttered a shot over the William Smith goalie from the slot. Kendrick LaPrade had an assist on the goal.
  • The Herons would not go quietly however. With just over 90 seconds remaining, Lonczak slipped past two Bowdoin defenders and snuck a shot past Peterson. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Caeley McCormick and Fiona Gallagher.
  • Luna Lu rounded out the scoring with just under a minute remaining in regulation. She forced a turnover below the goal line, skated to the front of the net and wristed a shot through the goalie's legs. It was her eighth goal of the season.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action Friday, Jan. 9, when it welcomes Nazareth to The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
