Two members of the William Smith soccer team were recognized by the Liberty League office for their performances in the Herons' victory over Vassar on Saturday. Senior goalie
Antonia Goerke was tabbed the defensive performer of the week while junior
Aleena Solano earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.
Â
Goerke and Solano played key roles as William Smith upset the eighth-ranked Brewers 2-1. The victory put the Herons (10-3-0, 6-0-0) in the driver's seat for the conference's regular season title. With just three games remaining, William Smith has a six-point lead on second-place Union.
Â
Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal as she earned her ninth win of the season. The native of Rottenburg, Germany, stopped seven of the eight shots she faced, including three in the second half as the Brewers pushed for the equalizer. Goerke also had a strong presence in the 18-yard box, breaking up Vassar crossing attempts before they could find their target. Goerke is 9-3-0 this season with a 0.82 GAA and an .845 save percentage.
Â
Solano was credited with the game-winning goal on Saturday. She collected a pass from junior
Grace Metzler, took a couple of dribbles with the ball and fired a shot from 30 yards out over the Vassar goalie and under the crossbar. It was Solano's second goal of the season.
Â
The Herons will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they welcome St. Lawrence to Cozzens Field. The Liberty League contest is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. Â
