Clarkson blanks Hobart 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked Hobart soccer team was defeated by Clarkson 4-0 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Statesmen fall to 8-2-0 on the season with a 2-2-0 mark in conference play.
 
Junior Jake Hans started in goal and made two saves in 71:33 of action in Hobart's goal. Sophomore Finn Connaughton played the final 18 minutes of the game.
 
Clarkson (5-3-2, 1-2-1) was led by Zach Ruthfield, who scored a pair of goals. Matt Gatchell added a goal and an assist and Paul Rolland had two helpers in the victory. Ian Burgos played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves as he earned the shutout. Burgos also had an assist.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the game with a 16-14 edge in shots, but Clarkson had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Golden Knights had four corner kicks, and the Statesmen had three.
 
 MATCH MOMENTS
  • Hobart had the game's first chance in the fifth minute, but Griffin Coutts' shot from the top of the 18-yard box just missed the crossbar.
  • Clarkson opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Noah Hermanson picked up a loose ball and slotted a shot past Hans for his first goal of the season.
  • Six minutes later, Ruthfield scored his first goal of the game. He broke up a clearing pass and chipped a shot over the charging goalie and into the vacated net.
  • In the 15th minute, Coutts broke into the 18-yard box and fired a shot on goal that was smothered by Burgos.
  • Hobart was issued a red card in the 39th minute and had to play the final 51 minutes of the game a player down.
  • In the 49th minute, Quinn Phillips' penalty kick attempt was stopped by Burgos.   
  • Gatchell sealed the game in the 62nd minute when he scored his first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Rolland and Burgos. The play started when Burgos stopped a free-kick attempt by Coutts and then quickly tossed the ball near midfield off the head of Rolland.
  • Eight minutes later, Ruthfield tacked on a fourth goal. He ran onto a through ball from Bodie Smith, dribbled around the goalie and fired a shot into the back of the net. Gatchell also had an assist on the goal.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 4, when it welcomes 22nd-ranked Cortland to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
