Nedd posts double-double against Saints

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart sophomore Monty Nedd produced his third double-double of the season on game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, but St. Lawrence rallied from a halftime deficit to escape Bristol Gym with a 70-65 win in Liberty League men's basketball action tonight.
 
Nedd was 8-of-12 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. He also handed out a game-high four assists. Junior Dorian Paki was a force in the paint, throwing down four dunks on his way to a 17-point game. Sophomore Allen Mordi added 13 points, seven rebounds and matched Nedd's four assists. Senior Gabriel Bergeron led the defense with a career-high four blocked shots.
 
Dan Andrerson led the Saints with 21 points, including three treys, and three steals. Adam Dudzinski chipped in 15 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Aidan Phelan posted 11 points off the bench. Tommy McMahon contributed nine points, five boards, four assists and three steals.
 
Hobart outrebounds St. Lawrence 34-31, but the Saints finished plus-eight in turnover margin and outscored the Statesmen 18-10 in points off turnovers. Hobart shot a torrid 57% from the floor in the first half while limiting SLU to 35.7% shooting. The Saints turned it around in the second half, shooting 50% from the floor and holding the Statesmen to 41.7% shooting.
 
GAME RECAP
First Half: Hobart 32, St. Lawrence 27
  • It was a back-and-forth first half through the first 15 minutes.
  • Anderson hit a 3-pointer to give the Saints a 25-18 lead with just over five minutes left in the half.
  • The Statesmen surged into the lead with 14 straight points thanks to the scoring efforts of Mordi (6 pts), Paki (5) and Nedd (3).
  • The four-minute scoring drought saw the Saints go 0-for-4 from the floor, while Hobart flipped its seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead.
  • Dudzinski stopped the run with a pair of free throws to send his team into the break, down five.
  • Mordi and Paki led all scorers with 10 first half points.
 
Second Half: St. Lawrence 70, Hobart 65
  • Nedd drained a three to start the second half scoring, giving Hobart its largest lead of the game 35-27.
  • St. Lawrence whittled its deficit down to one several times in the early going of the final frame, finally retaking the lead 45-44 on a Dudzinski layup with under 13 minutes remaining.
  • A minute later, Hobart cashed in on a SLU turnover to take a 48-47 lead on a layup by senior Alex Moesch. It proved to be the home team's final lead of the game.
  • McMahon broke a 48-all tie with a 3-pointer. The shot kick-started a 10-2 run by the visitors, giving them their largest lead of the night, 58-50.
  • The Statesmen fought back with the next seven points to make it a 1-point game with 4:23 left.
  • Hobart didn't a shot to tie or take the lead from that point on.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight marked Nedd's second straight 20-point game and seventh of the season.
  • Moesch scored nine points, including 1-for-3 shooting from deep. He's now made at least one 3-pointer in 27 consecutive games.
 
UP NEXT
  • Hobart (11-11, 5-10) will be back on the court in Bristol Gym at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, when the Statesmen taken on the Clarkson Golden Knights (11-11, 6-9).
